Job summary

Andreessen Horowitz (a16z) is seeking a backend engineer to join the Applied Software Group, building internal data tools for the investing and operations teams. You will own services that ingest, normalize, and power data products, design secure, scalable backends, and ship feature-rich systems with a strong emphasis on reliability and performance.

This role requires an in‑office presence 2–3 days a week in our San Francisco, CA office and offers ownership, rapid iteration, and close

Qualifications

• 3+ years of professional software engineering experience.
• Strong proficiency in Python 3 and willingness to learn new technologies.
• Experience deploying production services on at least one major cloud platform (GCP, AWS, or Azure).
• Experience with production SQL and NoSQL databases (e.g., PostgreSQL, MySQL, Elasticsearch).
• Experience building and deploying containerized services; familiarity with Kubernetes is a plus.

Responsibilities

• Build and maintain backend services that support internal data products and applications.
• Work closely with investing and operations teams to understand workflows and translate requirements into reliable software solutions.
• Contribute to design and implementation of new features and systems, with guidance from more experienced engineers.
