Responsibilities

• Detention Center Client Services: travel to Eloy and Florence detention centers 2–3 times per week; meet with potential clients; gather case information; obtain signatures; collect documentation.
• Coordinate and schedule follow-up consultations between attorneys and clients and their designated contacts.
• Communicate with family members before and after detention visits; ensure compliance with facility protocols.
• Conduct legal visits with existing clients to obtain declarations and supporting statements.
• Office-Based Legal Support: request criminal records and FOIA requests; provide interpretation as needed; draft declarations.
• Assist attorneys with case preparation and document management; support detained client caseload.

POSITION SUMMARY

The Detained Legal Assistant serves as a critical link between our attorneys and clients in immigration detention, providing essential legal support both in detention facilities and in the office. This role requires a compassionate professional who can navigate the unique challenges of working with detained individuals while maintaining the highest standards of legal assistance and client service.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Detention Center Client Services (60-70% of role)

• Travel to Eloy and Florence detention centers 2-3 times per week to conduct legal visits with potential and existing clients
• Meet with potential clients to gather case information for attorney review, obtain necessary signatures, and collect documentation for case evaluation
• Coordinate and schedule follow-up consultations between attorneys and potential client designated points of contact
• Communicate with family members and points of contact before and after detention visits
• Schedule and coordinate detention center visits in compliance with facility protocols
• Conduct legal visits with existing clients to obtain declarations, review application responses, gather supporting statements, and secure required signatures

Office-Based Legal Support (30-40% of role)

• Request and obtain criminal records and conduct FOIA requests
• Provide interpretation support as needed
• Draft client declarations and supporting documents
• Assist attorneys with case preparation and document management
• Perform general legal assistant duties to support the detained client caseload

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

• Reliable transportation and valid driver's license (required for regular travel to detention facilities; mileage reimbursement provided)
• Previous experience in legal intake or as a legal assistant, preferably in immigration law
• Strong organizational skills with attention to detail
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
• Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities
• Compassionate demeanor with cultural sensitivity when working with diverse clients
• Proficiency in case management systems and standard office software
• Ability to maintain strict confidentiality and professional boundaries
• Native fluency in English and Spanish
