Job summary

CTG, a long-standing partner, seeks a Mechanical Designer III to develop manufacturable designs from concept through procurement, fabrication, assembly and deployment for our on-site Corning operations.

This role combines roughly 50% design work with 50% installation, prototyping, assembly, fitting, and testing, requiring hands-on collaboration with engineers, machinists, and vendors.

Qualifications

• Experience designing custom equipment, machinery, tooling, fixtures, automation, or manufacturing systems.
• Strong SolidWorks experience with part modeling, assemblies, drafting, and detailing.
• Experience with SolidWorks PDM or similar engineering document management systems.
• Strong knowledge of mechanical tolerancing, GD&T, and manufacturability considerations.
• Hands-on assembly, inspection, and troubleshooting experience.

Responsibilities

• Develop complete, manufacturable designs from concepts through procurement, fabrication, assembly and deployment.

Description

Seeking an experienced Mechanical Designer / Mechanical Design Technician to support custom equipment, fixtures, tooling, prototypes, and manufacturing systems. This hands-on role is approximately 50% mechanical design and 50% installation, prototyping, assembly, fitting, troubleshooting, and manufacturing support.

The Designer III will develop complete, manufacturable designs from concepts and engineering direction through procurement, fabrication, assembly, and deployment.

Requirements

• Develop 3D models, assemblies, manufacturing drawings, fabrication drawings, BOMs, and engineering documentation using SolidWorks
• Manage engineering documentation, revisions, BOMs, and specifications using SolidWorks PDM
• Select purchased components, standard hardware, and commercial equipment
• Support procurement and coordinate with suppliers, machine shops, fabricators, and vendors
• Apply mechanical design principles including tolerancing, fit selection, GD&T, materials, manufacturability, and assembly methods
• Support prototype development, equipment assembly, fitting, inspection, testing, troubleshooting, installation, and commissioning
• Use common inspection equipment including calipers, micrometers, indicators, and height gages
• Collaborate with engineers, technicians, manufacturing personnel, and suppliers to resolve technical issues

Qualifications

• Experience designing custom equipment, machinery, tooling, fixtures, automation, or manufacturing systems
• Strong SolidWorks experience with part modeling, assemblies, drafting, and detailing
• Experience with SolidWorks PDM or similar engineering document management systems
• Strong knowledge of mechanical tolerancing, fit selection, GD&T fundamentals, constraint-based design, materials, manufacturability, fabrication, and assembly
• Experience creating BOMs and specifying mechanical components and hardware
• Strong mechanical aptitude with hands-on assembly, fitting, inspection, and troubleshooting experience
• Knowledge of machining, welding, sheet metal fabrication, additive manufacturing, and mechanical assembly processes
• Familiarity with industrial components including bearings, linear guides, lead screws, ball screws, belts, pulleys, gearboxes, pneumatics, hydraulics, structural framing, sensors, actuators, and motion control components
• Experience working with machine shops, fabrication vendors, equipment suppliers, and multidisciplinary engineering/manufacturing teams
• Strong problem-solving, communication, organizational, and independent working skills
