Job summary

Socket.dev is seeking a Mechanical Designer in Houston to develop and refine complete assemblies, create BOMs, and ensure manufacturability using SolidWorks. You will collaborate with engineers, drafters, and technicians to design, test, and launch products, while maintaining CAD data in the PDM system and supporting ISO 9001 documentation.

The role requires 5+ years in mechanical design, a 2-year technical degree, and proficiency in SolidWorks; travel up to 10% and overtime may be required.

Qualifications

  • 2-year technical degree or 3 years related experience.
  • 5+ years’ experience in mechanical design position with demonstrated independence.
  • Proficient in SolidWorks CAD modeling and drafting; AutoCAD experience beneficial.
  • Experienced with Product Data Management (PDM) systems usage.
  • Knowledgeable of machining processes CNC and manual laths, mills, lasers, EDM and welding.
  • Experience in manufacturing or lab testing environments with mechanical equipment.
  • Inspection experience using calipers and micrometers.
  • Proficient with spreadsheets and BOMs/product routings.
  • Knowledgeable of design documentation standards.
  • Basic understanding of mechanical stresses and tolerance analysis.
  • Adaptive in a dynamic, high-growth organization.
  • Ability to work on multiple projects with limited direction.
  • Exceptional interpersonal/written communication; interact with all levels.
  • Team player across business operations.
  • Must be able to work overtime to support schedules.

  • Able to travel to field locations (10%).

Responsibilities

  • Develop associative solid models and BOMs using SolidWorks and ERP interfaces.
  • Design for manufacturing with 3D models and detailed drawings.
  • Ensure designs meet form, fit, function, quality, manufacturability, cost, and schedule.
  • Apply standard design techniques to solve technical problems.
  • Create and maintain CAD revisions in the PDM system.
  • Support engineers during development, prototyping, testing, and fielding.
  • Assemble and test products per test plans and report results.
  • Assist with ISO 9001 documentation and MOC/QMS docs.
  • Perform basic design calculations using provided templates/calculators.
  • Interact with clients to understand design concepts and requirements.
  • Support change requests and field issue resolutions.
  • Assist training of personnel internal/external.
  • Communicate regularly with engineers, PMs, and team members.
  • Ensure compliance with QA/QC policies and specs.

Description

PURPOSE:

In accordance with company policies and procedures, the Designer will work with a team of Engineers, Drafters, Technicians, and other G&H personnel, as well as suppliers and customers to design, build, test and launch Yellow Jacket / G&H products and equipment.

CRITICAL FUNCTIONS:

1. Accurately develop associative solid models of completely assembled products and detail parts including bill of materials (BOM) utilizing SolidWorks software, company document management system and interface with company ERP system

2. Design for manufacturing including 3D associative solid models, detail drawings, weldment drawings, assemblies, and installation drawings using G&H drawing specifications

3. Execute designs within product specification guidelines for form, fit, function, quality, manufacturability, cost and schedule

4. Responsible for evaluating, selecting, and applying standard mechanical design techniques, procedures and criteria in solving technical problems pertaining to product design and/or development, manufacturability, product quality and test or systems compatibility

5. Create and maintain accurate revisions of CAD models, drawings and other data using Product Data Management (PDM) system

6. Support Engineers and other personnel during development, prototyping, testing and fielding of new and improved products.

7. Assemble and test products in accordance with test plans. Gather and submit test data and results to engineers and other team members.

8. Assist Engineers with developing and maintaining ISO 9001 and other documentation including test plans, work instructions, tech manuals, and other product data

9. Assist Engineers with drafting and implementing Management of Change (MOC) and other QMS documentation

10. Using provided templates / calculators, perform basic design calculations to assist with detailed design of products and fixtures

11. Interact with the client to understand design concept and requirements

12. Support customer change requests, internal process changes and field issues

13. Assist with training of personnel, both internal and external

14. Communicate regularly with Engineers, Project Managers, and other team members

15. Ensure compliance to applicable practices, QA/QC policies, performance standards and specifications

Requirements

1. 2-year technical degree or 3 years related experience

2. 5+ years’ experience in mechanical design position with demonstrated success of working independently

3. Proficient in SolidWorks CAD modeling and drafting; AutoCAD experience beneficial

4. Experienced with Product Data Management (PDM) systems usage

5. Knowledgeable of machining processes especially CNC and manual lathes, mills, saws, lasers, EDM and welding

6. Experience working in a manufacturing environment or in a lab testing environment with mechanical equipment required

7. Inspection experience using calipers, micrometers, and other inspection devices

8. Proficient with using spreadsheets and familiar with developing Bills of Materials and product Routings for the manufacturing process

9. Knowledgeable of design documentation standards

10. Basic understanding of mechanical stresses and tolerance analysis

11. Excels in a highly dynamic organization, experiencing high growth rates

12. Ability to work on multiple projects with limited direction

13. Exceptional interpersonal/written communication skills; can effectively interact with all levels of management

14. Team player able to work well across business operations and build strong teams

15. Must be able to work overtime when required to support project schedules or field issue resolutions
