Responsibilities

Objective

The Design Consultant guides customers through the design and selections process, providing expert guidance and helping them make informed decisions regarding products, finishes, warranty, and options while balancing design preferences, budget, building requirements, and established timelines. The Design Consultant serves as a key point of contact throughout the selections process. This position also supports the Design team with departmental projects, initiatives, process improvements, and other activities that contribute to the efficiency and success of the Design Department.

Areas of Responsibilities
Customer Selections

Prepare for and lead Customer Selection Appointment(s), including customer communication, product education, documentation, and follow-up.

  • Coordinate with the Design Assistant to schedule customer appointments.
  • Review plans, neighborhood specifications, structural addenda, and related documentation prior to appointments to ensure accuracy, completeness, and familiarity with the home.
  • Communicate with customers prior to their appointment to provide introductory information.
  • Develop and maintain a strong working knowledge of InSearch, our online design studio, and effectively guide customers in the process when requested.
  • Review applicable policies, procedures, expectations and design timelines with customer.
  • Guide customers through product and finish selections based on their design preferences, home specifications, warranty considerations, and target investment range, while providing knowledgeable recommendations and maintaining established program guidelines.
  • Manage Custom Option Requests.
  • Accurately process approved changes within established timelines.
  • Prepare, update, and present design documents and addenda for customer review and approval.
  • Finalize customer paperwork and complete the selections process to ensure all required documents, approvals, and selections are complete and properly documented within established timeline.
  • Select products, finishes, and options for spec homes that align with neighborhood and Sales requirements and remain within established investment parameters and timelines.
  • Obtain required approvals from the Design Manager, New Home Consultant, and Sales Manager prior to finalizing selections.
Customer Experience and Preview Nights
  • Host Preview Nights at the Design Studio and provide an engaging, informative, and welcoming customer experience.
  • Assist customers in understanding products, finishes, and design options.
Product Knowledge and Industry Awareness
  • Maintain current knowledge of available products, design trends, and industry best practices through training, seminars, research, and collaboration with vendors and trade partners.
  • Stay informed of product changes, discontinued offerings, new products, and program requirements.
  • Collaborate with the Design team to evaluate new product offerings, identify underperforming products or selections, and support related documentation, analysis, and recommendations.
  • Assist the Sales and Marketing Teams with design-related content, including product information, photography, videos, and other materials as needed.
  • Respond to customer, trade partner, and construction manager questions or concerns promptly, professionally, and with a solution-orientated approach.
  • Communicate effectively with internal departments and trade partners to support accurate and timely execution of offerings and customer selections.
Department Support
  • Assist the Design Manager and Design team with departmental projects, initiatives, process improvements, and other responsibilities as assigned.
Education, Skills, and Experience Required
  • Previous retail, customer service, sales, or consultative customer-facing experience required.
  • Strong design and product knowledge, with the ability to read and interpret blueprints and related customer documents.
  • Exceptional customer service skills with the ability to build trust, listen effectively, and guide customers through detailed decisions.
  • Strong organizational skills with excellent attention to detail, follow-through, and time-management abilities.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to explain technical or product information clearly.
  • Ability to effectively use multiple technology platforms and learn new software systems to perform daily responsibilities.
