Job summary

US Army Corps of Engineers in Detroit District seeks a Derrick Boat Engineer on the St. Marys River. You will operate a derrick boat, perform maintenance, repairs, and troubleshooting to keep navigation and hydroelectric operations running smoothly.

This permanent, full-time position requires readiness for on-site duty in Soo Project Office with responsibilities including logs, 24/7 watch when scheduled, and adherence to safety and manufacturer standards.

Qualifications

  • Experience operating, maintaining, troubleshooting and repairing complex diesel- and hydraulic-powered equipment on a vessel.
  • Ability to use manuals and schematics to diagnose mechanical/electrical issues and ensure safe operation.
  • Competencies include tool use/maintenance, dexterity and safety, and equipment assembly/repair knowledge.

Responsibilities

  • Computes ballast water levels to maintain stability during crane lifts and operations.
  • Troubleshoots machine problems following marine mechanical best practices.
  • Maintains written and computerized maintenance logs, coordinating with Facilities personnel.
  • Provides round-the-clock watch as scheduled to ensure continuous operation.
  • Performs major overhauls per manufacturer guidance or operating needs.
  • Adheres to manufacturer specs in repair and maintenance.
