Job description

The Westmoreland County Sheriff’s Office is currently accepting applications for the position of Part-Time Deputy Sheriff. This role offers the potential for advancement to a full-time position based on performance and operational needs. The purpose of this position is to serve various court orders and maintain courtroom security. Employees in this classification are Law enforcement officers who are required to perform duties in accordance with the relevant codes and laws of the Commonwealth and County Government.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF JOB:

  1. Attends meetings, training and seminars as required
  2. Performs other job-related duties as required.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED:

Instruction given by Corporals, Sergeants, Lieutenants, Captain, Chief Deputy and Sheriff

SUPERVISION GIVEN:

None.

WORKING CONDITIONS:
  1. Below normal indoor exposure to dust/dirt; works outdoors or on road frequently and is subject to outdoor elements and environmental conditions.
  2. Subject to frequent travel during all seasons.
  3. Works in conditions of potential outbursts of disruptive behavior of clients or consumers.
  4. Periodically works beyond normal work hours or on-call as needed.
PHYSICAL/MENTAL CONDITIONS:
  1. Must possess the ability to record, convey and present information, explain procedures and follow instructions.
  2. Must be able to stand, walk, and drive frequently during the workday, with occasional sitting, twisting, bending, kneeling, stooping, and reaching as necessary in order to carry out essential job duties.
  3. Requires very coordinated dexterity of fingers/hands, arms/legs/torso as necessary to carry out job duties.
  4. Sedentary work, with occasional lifting/carrying of objects with a maximum weight of up to 10 pounds.
  5. Must be able to physically and mentally react quickly in the event of a disturbance or physical outbreak.
  6. Must have agility to be able to move frequently throughout the work day.
QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. EDUCATION/TRAINING:
    Applicants must be a high school graduate or equivalent
    Required to maintain a valid Pennsylvania Driver’s License
    Act 2 Deputy certification must be obtained within one year of hire date and maintain Act 2 certification as mandated by the Commonwealth.
  2. WORK EXPERIENCE:
    Act 120 certification or current enrollment in an Act 120 academy is preferred.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:
  1. Ability to operate equipment including a motor vehicle, firearms, restraining devices, radio and other communications equipment.
  2. Ability to operate a variety of office equipment.
  3. Ability to maneuver objects weighing up to 150lbs.
  4. Ability to successfully pass physical fitness exam for Act 2 certification.
  5. Ability to comprehend and interpret a variety of documents including; court orders, civil writs, complaints, judgment’s, executions, subpoenas, state rules of civil procedures and codes, state vehicle code and crimes code.
  6. Ability to prepare a variety of documents including affidavits of service, weapons confiscation inventory, etc., while using prescribed format and conforming to all the rules of punctuation, grammar dictation and style.
  7. Ability to use and interpret criminal justice terminology.
