Westmoreland County is seeking applicants for the full-time position of Corrections Officer for the Westmoreland County Prison. The purpose of this position is to monitor the activities of inmates and ensure the security of prison facilities. Job duties include but are not limited to: maintaining care, custody, and control of inmates, maintaining security of facility, and processing new inmates.
Applicants must be a high school graduate or equivalent and successfully complete the required training at the Pennsylvania Department of Corrections Training Academy upon completion of a probationary period.
To perform duties related to the care, custody, control and discipline of inmates; monitor the activities of inmates and ensure the security of prison facilities.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF JOB:
- Maintains care, custody, and control of inmates
- Maintains security of facility; locks doors; controls entry into facility; maintains key log.
- Supervises work details, recreation yard, and other areas.
- Processes new inmates; prepares photo ID; takes fingerprints, inventories of personal items, money and other inmate possessions; initiates medical history records, primary mental status, and medication records of new inmates; researches personal data on inmates.
- Operates computer; enter personal data regarding new inmates; prints out reports.
- Maintains population rosters.
- Secures weapons from outside agencies.
- Responds to emergencies pertaining to inmates; responds to fire alarms; provides first aid as required.
- Provides counseling, legal information, and other assistance to inmates.
- Distributes food, clothing, and other items to inmates; dispenses medication to inmates.
- Answers telephones, taking messages, providing assistance, and directing calls; maintains phone call log; provides information to law enforcement agencies.
- Ability to perform all duties as listed in the post orders for this position.
- Perform other duties or special assignments as required.
OTHER DUTIES OF JOB:
- Attends meetings, training and seminars as required.
- Assists in transporting of inmates as needed.
- Performs other job related duties and assignments as required.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED:
Receives occasional instruction and limited daily supervision from the Warden, Deputy Wardens Sergeant, and Lieutenants in regard to daily work duties.
SUPERVISION GIVEN:
Function as a lead worker during assigned shift and supervises several unionized corrections officers.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
- Works primarily indoors with adequate space, lighting, ventilation and temperatures.
- Works within average indoor exposures to dust and dirt.
- Works within average exposures to noises and stress, subject to frequent disruption.
- Subject to working shifts, on call, or as warranted.
- Potential exposure to blood borne pathogens and/or communicable diseases.
- Works daily with volatile and potentially hostile inmates.
PHYSICAL/MENTAL CONDITIONS:
- Must possess ability to record, convey and present information, explain procedures and follow instructions.
- Must possess the ability to work safely while maintaining control and order in prison buildings and inmate housing areas.
- Dexterity requirements include fine manipulation of fingers/hands; to coordinated movements of feet/legs/torso to maintain balance.
- Light work, with occasional lifting/carrying of objects with a maximum weight of up to 20 pounds.
- Must be able to cope with the physical and mental stresses of the position.
- Must be able to move frequently throughout the workday as needed to carry out essential job duties.
- Must be able to stand for long periods of time throughout the work day, with intermittent periods of walking and sitting.
- Must be able to pay close attention to detail and concentrate in a moderately stressful environment.
- Must demonstrate constant emotional stability.
- Must be able to physically and mentally react quickly in the event of a physical altercation or disturbance.

- EDUCATION/TRAINING:
High School or Equiv. in General Studies is required.

- Must possess the ability to implement routine procedures, direct and carry out emergency procedures.
- Must possess the ability to maintain confidentiality in regard to inmate information and records.
- Must possess the knowledge of County Prison Board policy and procedure.

- Must possess the knowledge of search and inspection techniques.
- Must possess the ability to lead a team of correctional officers.
- Must possess skill and safe handling in firearms, chemical agents and other weapons of trade.
- Must possess skill in the use of inmate restraints and inmate transport equipment and devices.
- Must possess the ability to establish effective work relationships with superiors, peers, subordinates, medical staff, social services, education, law enforcement professionals, inmates and their families, friends, and advocates, elected and appointed officials of Federal, State and Local governments and other interested parties.
