Job summary

The Martin County Sheriff's Office invites applications for a Deputy Sheriff. This sworn role performs general law enforcement duties, enforces laws, and supports public safety with a focus on protecting life and property under the Sheriff’s direction.

Overtime and holiday pay influence starting salary steps 1–3. Candidates with 1–4 years qualify for Step 2 at $83,163.40; those with 5+ years reach Step 3 at $87,321.57.

Qualifications

• Graduation from High school or an equivalent program.
• Must possess a valid Florida driver's license.
• Certification from a Department of Law Enforcement Police Standards and Training Commission.

Responsibilities

• Promote public safety in patrol area.
• Respond to all dispatch calls in a timely manner.
• Investigate illegal or suspicious activities.
• Respond to a variety of calls that require several intervention approaches ranging from personal counseling techniques to the use of physical or deadly force.
• Take control of accident scenes to maintain traffic flow, to assist accident victims, and to investigate causes.
• Observe traffic and initiate traffic stops.
• Perform checks on dwellings, buildings and grounds to ensure prevention of damage by fire, theft and/or vandalism.
• Respond to calls for assistance, administer first aid at crime or accident scenes; also securing these scenes to make sure the integrity of the scene and evidence are not compromised.
• Verify that the proper legal charges have been made against law offenders.
• Execute arrest warrants, locating and taking persons into custody.
• Apprehend and arrest suspects without violating suspect's rights or causing undue harm while observing officer safety procedures at all times.
• Record daily activities and submit logs.
• Prepare other related reports and paperwork disbursed to appropriate authorities.
• Transport or escort prisoners and defendants en route to courtrooms, prisons or jails, attorney's offices or medical facilities.
• Testify in court concerning work activities.
• Place people in protective custody.
• Assist in the presentation of departmental training programs.
