Job description

ATTENTION:

ALL APPLICANTS FOR THE DEPUTY SHERIFF POSITION ARE REQUIRED TO COMPLETE THE Personal History Statement PRIOR TO APPLYING. THE STATEMENT MUST BE COMPLETED AND SUBMITTED ALONG WITH THE EMPLOYMENT APPLICATION. PLEASE COMPLETE THE FORM AND SAVE IT TO ATTACH AT THE END OF THE APPLICATION PROCESS.

Compensation:

Sign-on bonus of $15,000 (paid in three installments: $5,000 upon academy graduation, $5,000 after successful completion of 1-year probation, and $5,000 after two years of employment). Lateral bonus of $7,500 (also paid in three installments: $2,500 at hire, $2,500 after probation, and $2,500 after two years).

Job Responsibilities:

  1. Provide law enforcement services for St. Mary’s County in accordance with all applicable statutes and laws.
  2. Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or GED.

Additional Requirements:

  • Must be 21 years old, possess a valid Maryland driver’s license, and be a U.S. citizen.
  • Pass written exam, physical agility, polygraph, physical and psychological exams, drug screening, and background check.
  • Vision correctable to 20/20; weight proportionate to height and body frame.
  • Complete a 26-week Maryland Police Training Commission approved academy or be eligible for recertification.
  • Ability to work shifts, including weekends and holidays; this is an essential personnel position during weather emergencies.
  • Maintain CPR/AED/FA certification.

Supervision:

Supervised by Sergeant or in their absence, a Corporal or Deputy First Class.

Physical Fitness:

Recruits must undergo physical training including being taken down to the ground, exposure to OC spray, and demonstrate physical abilities such as running, jumping, climbing, and strength tests.

Work Conditions:

Position involves strenuous effort, handling heavy objects, and responding to emergencies on foot or vehicle, with exposure to dangerous situations and environmental hazards.

Must be able to use protective gear and respond physically to calls, including during extreme weather or potentially violent situations.

  • Ability to operate firearms, vehicles, and law enforcement equipment.
  • Strong communication, decision-making, and organizational skills.
