Scope of Position
Coding services assign diagnosis and procedural codes to inpatient and outpatient medical records to facilitate reimbursement and data collection for the OSU Health System. ICD-10-CM/PCS diagnoses and procedure codes are applied to inpatients, and CPT-4 codes are used for outpatients not captured through the charge description master. Medical record data is reviewed for accuracy in IHIS during coding.
The senior medical records coding specialist codes medical records at the conclusion of patient visits. This role requires coding multiple work types for inpatient and outpatient services, including selecting appropriate diagnoses and procedures, assigning ICD-10 and CPT-4 codes, and abstracting relevant information such as admission source, type, disposition, and physicians involved.
Codes are selected using Computer Assisted Coding/Encoder Software after reviewing information in IHIS. The coded data interfaces with the IHIS Resolute Billing system. The staff member ensures all edits are addressed for complete and accurate coding, including MS-DRG and APR-DRG assignment for reimbursement.
This staff member maintains productivity and quality standards, adheres to the work schedule, and submits weekly volume logs.
Associate’s Degree in Health Information Management. Certification as a Registered Health Information Technician, Registered Health Information Administrator, Certified Coding Specialist (AHIMA), or Certified Outpatient Coder (AAPC) if managing hospital coding; ROCC if coding Radiation Oncology; RHIA, CCS, COC, or CPC (AAPC) for professional coding. At least 2 years of relevant experience required; 4-6 years preferred.
Completion of a CAHIIM-approved coding certificate or HIMT program or equivalent education & experience.
Proven coding proficiency through OSUWMC’s coding test.
Familiarity with computer-assisted coding and automated encoders is a plus.
