• Good physical condition; pass psychological and medical exams; pass background and drug screening.
• Valid Wisconsin driver's license with a good driving record.
• Work evenings, weekends and holidays.

Responsibilities

• Perform preventive patrol in assigned area.
• Continually observe for criminal activity, safety hazards, traffic violations, known offenders, and problem areas.
• Handle complaints from the public.
• Provide assistance to motorists and the general public.
• Observe, detect and investigate violations and document actions.
• Conduct interviews and interrogations of victims, witnesses, suspects and offenders.
• Conduct preliminary and follow-up investigations.
• Identify, collect, process, package and log physical evidence.
• Identify and arrest offenders.
• Serve arrest warrants, search warrants and other court documents.
• Assist prosecutors in case preparation and testify in court.
• Investigate traffic accidents; protect and diagram scenes.
• Investigate lost/found property and missing persons.
• Assist other law enforcement agencies.
• Respond to alarms and check buildings for security.
• Transport prisoners and detainees.
• Attend and participate in training; maintain knowledge of procedures and laws.
• Prepare accurate reports and maintain confidentiality.

Purpose of Position

The purpose of this position is to protect county citizens and property, prevent crime, apprehend criminals, provide law enforcement service, and enforce state and federal laws and county ordinances. The work is performed during an assigned shift and under the supervision of the Patrol Sergeant and/or Patrol Lieutenant.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.

• Perform preventive patrol in assigned area.
• Continually observe for criminal activity, safety hazards, traffic violations, known offenders, neighborhood routines and potential problem areas.
• Handle complaints made by the public.
• Provide assistance to motorists and the general public.
• Observe for, detect and investigate violations of laws and ordinances and document those actions for future use.
• Conduct interviews and interrogation of victims, witnesses, suspects and offenders.
• Conduct preliminary and follow-up investigations.
• Identify, collect, process, package and log physical evidence. Search persons, vehicles, places and buildings.
• Identify and arrest offenders.
• Seek and serve arrest warrants, search warrants and other court documents.
• Assist prosecutors in the preparation of cases for trial. Appear and testify in court as summoned.
• Investigate traffic accidents, including protecting the scene, aiding the injured, controlling traffic, clearing the scene, determining the cause, and preparing reports and diagrams. Control, regulate and direct vehicular and pedestrian traffic.
• Investigate reports of lost and found property, and missing and found persons.
• Assist other law enforcement agencies.
• Respond to alarms. Check buildings for security.
• Transport prisoners and detainees.
• Attend and participate in training as assigned. Maintain knowledge of police patrol and general investigation procedures, policies and methods; incident documentation requirements; rules of evidence; individual restraint and control methods; traffic safety principles; local geography; applicable statutes and ordinances.
• Prepare accurate and complete reports on any and all activities in which engaged.
• Maintain a high level of confidentiality in all aspects of job functions.

Additional Tasks and Responsibilities

While the following tasks are necessary for the work of the unit, they are not an essential part of the purpose of this position and may also be performed by other unit members.

• Guard prisoners.
• Type reports, forms, correspondence and other materials.
• Answer telephone calls, photocopy materials, fax messages, sort and file records.
• Provide input to Sheriff on maintaining or improving service to the general public.

Job Qualifications:

Associate degree in Criminal Justice, Police Science or sixty (60) fully accredited college credits. Must have completed the Wisconsin Basic Law Enforcement 520/720-hour Recruit Academy and be certifiable by the date of hire. Must be 18 years of age, or older, United States citizen; ability to possess a firearm; no felony or domestic abuse convictions, good physical condition, must take and pass a psychological and medical examination; pass background investigation and pre-employment drug screen. Possession of valid Wisconsin driver's license with a good driving record. Ability to work evenings, weekends and holidays.
