  • Collaborate with editor in chief and director of editorial operations on strategy and staffing.
  • Guide conversations about the types of stories Texas Monthly wants to tell and how to tell them.

Job description

Texas Monthly is looking for a deputy editor, who will report to the editor in chief and work closely with that position to execute their vision for the magazine across all its journalism platforms. The deputy editor will be a vital partner to the editor in chief and the director of operations in shaping the future of Texas Monthly and ensuring that the magazine consistently produces some of the highest-quality storytelling in the nation. The deputy editor will directly supervise multiple editors, who in turn oversee all the magazine’s writers and editors. This editor should be enthusiastic about coaching and providing feedback to editors at various levels of experience, including on assignment strategy, story structure, line editing, and leadership/management skills, to elevate Texas Monthly’s journalism and aim to grow its audience.

This full-time staff position is based in Austin, Texas, and requires working regularly out of our downtown office. The deputy editor will:
  • Supervise the story director and multiple executive editors, who in turn oversee all the magazine’s writers and editors
  • Work with editors, the editor in chief, and the print managing editor to curate a variety of timely and engaging stories within each print issue, and to ensure a compelling and varied lineup of cover stories
  • Work with editors and the digital managing editor to refine and enforce an editorial vision and publishing cadence for texasmonthly.com
  • Provide editing and assigning feedback to editors, including through top edits of stories
  • Occasionally assign and edit stories, including approximately six longform feature stories a year
  • Provide editorial feedback on other publishing platforms, such as video and podcasts, as delegated by the editor in chief
  • Collaborate closely with the editor in chief and director of editorial operations on strategy, including deciding whether and when to launch new editorial products and how to best deploy the department’s sixty-plus staffers across its many initiatives
  • Help guide conversations across the editorial staff about the types of stories Texas Monthly wants to tell and how it wants to tell the
Successful candidates will possess the following:
  • Experience in, and enthusiasm for, managing other editors and coaching them on how to effectively supervise and edit writers
  • Exceptional editing abilities, from the structural level to the line level, including on longform features
  • A talent for writing clear and compelling display type, including cover lines
  • A friendly, collaborative, and communicative work style
Previous experience/education:
  • Bachelor’s degree
  • At least ten years of editing experience at a magazine or similar publication that publishes longform journalism
  • At least five years of experience leading and supervising teams of journalists
