Job summary

Texas Monthly in Austin, TX is seeking a deputy editor to report to the editor in chief and lead a team of editors and writers across print, web, and multimedia. The deputy editor will supervise editors, coach editors at varying levels, and shape story strategy with the editor in chief.

The role emphasizes coaching, high editing standards, and ensuring a compelling and varied lineup of stories across platforms.

Qualifications

Experience managing editors and coaching them on supervision.
Exceptional editing abilities from structure to line level, including longform features.
Ability to write clear and compelling display text, including cover lines.
Collaborative and communicative work style.

Responsibilities

Supervise the story director and multiple editors who oversee writers and editors.
Curate timely and engaging stories for print and ensure a varied lineup of cover stories.
Refine editorial vision and publishing cadence for texasmonthly.com.
Provide editing and assigning feedback to editors, including top edits of stories.
Occasionally assign and edit stories, including roughly six longform features per year.
Collaborate with editor in chief and director of editorial operations on strategy and staffing.
Guide conversations about the types of stories Texas Monthly wants to tell and how to tell them.
