Job summary

City of Downey is seeking a Deputy Director of Community Development - Planning to lead the Planning Division, supervise staff, and partner with other departments to advance responsible land-use and zoning initiatives.

The role focuses on data-driven decision making, budget management, and delivering high-quality outcomes for the community. A strategic, inclusive leader is essential for guiding modernization efforts and maintaining excellent public service.

Qualifications

• Education in Public Administration, Architecture, Urban Planning or related field is required.
• Eight (8) years of increasingly responsible professional planning experience; three (3) years supervisory is desirable.
• Knowledge of city planning laws, zoning regulations, and related disciplines.

Responsibilities

• Oversees municipal planning operations and staff within the Planning Division.
• Evaluates program goals and objectives; tracks progress and outcomes.
• Manages Planning Counter and ensures exceptional customer service.
• Processes private development projects with other City Departments.
