Job Description for Civil Engineer

The Transportation Planning and Management Division (TPM) is responsible for the safe, efficient, and environmentally responsible movement of people and goods on the City's streets. The division's responsibilities include planning, street design, technical analysis, signs, transit development, freight mobility, and markings, ensuring safety for motor vehicle occupants, pedestrians, and cyclists. TPM's Design & Construction (D&C) unit provides professional engineering oversight for geometric design elements of NYC roadways, maintaining street plans, pavement markings, and overseeing resurfacing projects.

D&C seeks motivated candidates to help create safer streets through pedestrian facilities, plazas, cycling networks, and transit networks, using engineering measures like traffic calming and road diets. The Borough Deputy Director of Design will report to the Borough Director of Design and will be involved in field investigations, engineering design using AutoCAD and Civil 3D, and oversight of borough project engineers. Responsibilities also include reviewing capital proposals, analyzing designs, and managing design requests and borough markings post-resurfacing. The role requires collaborative work, professional development, and strong communication skills. Proficiency in AutoCAD and Civil 3D is essential, along with adherence to safety regulations.

Preferred Skills

• Valid New York State driver's license (must be maintained throughout employment)
• Familiarity with street design standards from FHWA, MUTCD, NYCDOT, AASHTO, CROW, NACTO, NYSDOT
• Knowledge of innovative street design techniques
• Familiarity with GIS, AutoCAD, and Microsoft Office Suite
• Proactive, collaborative, organized, and excellent communicator
• Strong time management and adaptability to changing technologies

Additional Information

Less than 2 years of City service: $90,667; 2 or more years: $104,267. Candidates must be serving permanently as a Civil Engineer or be on the civil service list. The position is eligible for remote work up to 2 days per week under the Remote Work Pilot Program. Location: 33-00 Northern Blvd, LIC, 11101. Hours: 35/week, shift TBD.
