The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) is seeking a Data Technician to collect, code, and review vital records data and to support statewide registration systems such as VERA and EDRS.

The role includes providing daily telephone assistance to customers, interpreting related statutes, and acting as a liaison for city, state, and local staff to ensure accurate, complete vital records registrations.

The function of this position is to collect, compile, code, and review program data for state birth, death, marriage, divorce, parentage, and fetal death records. The position is responsible for monitoring and providing technical support to hospital personnel, funeral directors, medical certifiers, and local registrar personnel statewide for using the Vital Events Registration Application (VERA) and the Electronic Death Registration System (EDRS). The position interprets state statutes related to vital record documents, handling and transmitting data, provides daily telephone assistance for customers outside of the department, and to city, state, and local government personnel. The position serves as a liaison for the department answering numerous external customer inquiries regarding issues of data quality, completeness, and accuracy required for the proper registration of vital records or paternity documents.

Experience

Departmental Technician 7: One year of experience performing administrative support activities equivalent to the 7-level in state service.

Departmental Technician 8: One year of experience performing administrative support activities equivalent to the 8-level in state service.

OR

Departmental Technician 8: One year of experience as a technician or paraprofessional equivalent to the entry level in state service.

Departmental Technician E9: One year of experience as a supervisor of administrative support activities equivalent to the 9-level in state service.

OR

Departmental Technician E9: One year of experience performing administrative support activities equivalent to the 9-level in state service.

OR

Departmental Technician E9: Two years of experience as a technician or paraprofessional, including one year of experience equivalent to the intermediate level in state service.

Departmental Technician 7: Completion of two years of college (60 semester or 90 term credits) may be substituted for the experience requirement.

Departmental Technician 8: Possession of a Bachelor’s degree may be substituted for the experience requirement.

Departmental Technician E9: Possession of a Bachelor’s degree and one year of job-related experience may be substituted for the experience requirement.

Position Location/Remote Office:

The physical location of this position is 333 South Grand Avenue, Lansing, MI 48933. Based on operational needs and within established limits, remote work and alternate or hybrid work schedule requests for this position may be considered. Selected candidates who have been approved to work remotely or a hybrid schedule must complete that work within Michigan. Candidates should confirm work location and schedule at the time of interview.

Employees will be provided computers to perform state work. Phones may also be provided for necessary communications. If working remotely, employees will be responsible for providing other components of a remote office at their own expense, including:

  • A secure work location that allows privacy and prevents distractions.
  • A high-speed internet connection of at least 25 Mbps download and 5 Mbps upload.
  • Suitable lighting, furniture, and utilities.
