Job Description:

Under the general supervision of the Dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Behavioral Sciences, the Department Chair, Associate Professor of Religious Studies is responsible for delivering high-quality instruction, advancing research in religious studies, and contributing to the growth and visibility of the program. The professor will engage in scholarly research, secure funding opportunities, and promote interdisciplinary studies that explore the historical, cultural, and contemporary significance of religion. Additionally, the role includes marketing the program to prospective students, strengthening its academic reputation, and fostering community and institutional partnerships.

The Department Chair will also support student engagement through mentorship, curriculum development, and experiential learning opportunities, ensuring that graduates are well-prepared for careers in academia, ministry, non-profit leadership, public service, and other related fields.

  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Behavioral Sciences.
  • Assumes responsibility for the management and maintenance of all departmental records, and/preparation of reports in accordance with college procedures.
  • Obtains and/or manages existing extracurricular grants and contracts either independently or in collaboration with departmental faculty.
  • Teach undergraduate and/or graduate courses in religious studies, including foundational and advanced topics.
  • Conduct and publish scholarly research in recognized academic journals and participate in national and international conferences.
  • Develop and implement strategies to enhance the visibility and enrollment of the religious studies program.
  • Collaborate with faculty across disciplines to create interdisciplinary courses and research initiatives.
  • Mentor students in academic and professional development, including advising on career pathways in religious studies and related fields.
  • Engage with religious and cultural organizations to create opportunities for student internships, community service, and field research.
  • Lead efforts to secure external funding for research projects, program development, and student support initiatives.
  • Organize lectures, panel discussions, and public events to foster dialogue on religious, ethical, and social issues.
  • Participate in university service, committee work, and accreditation-related activities.
  • Stay current with emerging trends and methodologies in religious studies to ensure curriculum relevance and innovation.

Hiring Range

Hiring Range $71,727.48-$96,832.00

Education

Ph.D. in Religious Studies, Theology, or a closely related field.

Work Experience

Required:

  • Minimum of five (5) years of experience in higher education teaching and research.
  • A strong record of scholarly publications and academic contributions in religious studies.
  • Experience developing academic programs and increasing student engagement.
  • Demonstrated ability to market an academic program and attract prospective students.
  • Strong commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in religious studies education.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively with students, faculty, and community partners.

Preferred:
  • Previous experience working as a Department Chair.
  • Experience securing grants or external funding for research and academic initiatives.
  • Expertise in interdisciplinary approaches that connect religious studies with fields such as history, sociology, anthropology, or ethics.
  • Familiarity with Texas Southern University’s student demographics and institutional priorities.
  • Experience in online and hybrid teaching methods.
Working/Environmental Conditions
  • Primarily office and classroom setting.
  • Occasional travel to academic conferences, community events, and partnership meetings.
