Job summary

NARA Northwest (NARA NW) is seeking a Dental Hygienist for our Portland, OR clinic. This in-person, full-time role offers a Monday-Thursday schedule with earlier start times and flexibility to meet program needs.

The position involves patient screening, X-ray taking, calculus removal, sealants/fluoride application, and patient education. The ideal candidate has 2+ years of dental hygiene experience, an Oregon license with local anesthesia, and CPR certification.

Qualifications

• Two years’ experience as a registered dental hygienist preferred.
• Associate or bachelor’s degree in dental hygiene.
• Possession of, or ability to obtain, an appropriate and valid license to practice dental hygiene issued by the State of Oregon.
• Oregon dental hygiene license must include, or can obtain, a local anesthesia permit; current Healthcare Provider CPR certification or the ability to obtain the certification.
• Must pass a pre-employment or for cause drug tests.
• Must pass criminal background and DMV checks.
• Experience working within the Native American/Alaska Native community preferred.

Responsibilities

• Provide patient screening procedures; assessment of oral health conditions, health history review, oral cancer screening, head/neck inspection, dental charting, vital signs.
• Take and expose dental x-rays.
• Remove calculus and plaque from all tooth surfaces.
• Apply sealants, fluoride, and silver diamine fluoride.
• Teach patients oral hygiene strategies (brushing, flossing, nutrition).
• Perform documentation and office management activities as assigned.
• Administer topical and local anesthesia.
• Provide clinical services for mentally ill and/or drug-affected/recovering patients.

Position Overview:

The Dental Hygienist provides comprehensive dental hygiene services to Native American and Alaska Native patients and other vulnerable populations.

What you will do:

• Provide patient screening procedures; such as assessment of oral health conditions, review of the health history, oral cancer screening, head and neck inspection, dental charting and taking blood pressure and pulse.
• Take and expose dental x-rays.
• Remove calculus and plaque (hard and soft deposits) from all surfaces of the teeth
• Apply preventive materials to the teeth (e.g., sealants, fluoride, silver diamine fluoride)
• Teach patients appropriate oral hygiene strategies to maintain oral health; (e.g., tooth brushing, flossing and nutritional counseling)
• Perform documentation and office management activities as assigned.
• Administer topical and local anesthesia.
• Provide clinical services for mentally ill and/or drug affected/recovering patients.
