Job Description
This position is for a dental hygienist responsible for conducting oral examinations, performing dental prophylaxis, and other duties related to dental health preservation and disease prevention. The employee performs a full range of dental hygienist duties independently under the supervision of a licensed dentist.
Part I: Essential Position Functions and Duties
- Perform oral prophylaxis, scaling, root planning, and polishing using hand scalers, ultrasonic instruments, and polishers.
- Examine the mouth for dental issues such as periodontal disease or tooth decay, chart findings, and report to the dentist.
- Instruct patients on proper oral hygiene techniques, denture care, and medication usage.
- Create and maintain dental treatment records and charts.
- Expose and process dental radiographs; read radiographs and alert the dentist to observations.
- Assist the dentist during restorative, surgical, and endodontic procedures.
- Follow infection control procedures, including sterilization and disinfection of instruments and equipment.
- Maintain dental instruments and equipment, ensuring security of medications, instruments, and needles.
- Schedule and record dental appointments.
- Apply topical fluorides, anesthetics, and desensitizing agents.
- Complete chartings, manage inventory, and perform other dental office tasks.
- Remove periodontal and surgical packs and sutures.
- Conduct health screenings, including oral exams, X-rays, and dental condition assessments; refer patients as needed.
- Perform related duties as assigned.

Qualifications
Education and Experience
- Associate's degree in dental hygiene.
- Two years of dental hygiene experience, including one year in a clinic setting.
Licenses and Certifications
- Registered dental hygienist licensure by the Board of Dentistry.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Knowledge of dental equipment, procedures, terminology, and techniques.
- Skill in dental hygiene techniques and chairside assistance.
- Ability to evaluate dental health, instruct patients, maintain records, and communicate effectively.
