Description
POSITION SUMMARY:
The Dental Assistant II is an entry-level position that requires certification as a dental assistant. The Dental Assistant II shall be responsible for chairside assisting, rooming and dismissing patients, setting up and breaking down operatory rooms, taking X-rays, ensuring patient comfort, providing good patient services, and sterilizing dental instruments and equipment.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Chairside assisting with dentist during treatment procedures
- Learning each dentist’s preferred practices and tray setup for specific treatments
- Following all OSHA, Dental Board, and health center policies and procedures
- Maintaining proper patient treatment records
- Providing oral hygiene instructions to patients
- Breaking down and setting up operatory rooms
- Turning on all units, switches, and water before patient sits down
- Asking about the patient’s medical history and taking blood pressure and pulse
- Preparing and sterilizing instruments and equipment
- Helping patients feel comfortable before, during, and after dental treatment
- Providing patients with instructions for oral care following surgery or other dental procedures (pre- and post-operative instructions)
- Teaching patients appropriate oral hygiene strategies to maintain oral health (e.g., brushing, flossing, nutritional counseling)
- Stocking supplies in operatory rooms, restrooms, labs, etc.
- Traveling to other dental clinics to provide coverage
- Setting up trays for treatment procedures
- Seating and dismissing patients
- Assisting with receptionist duties such as scheduling, answering phones, pulling and filing charts
- Assisting with dental referrals and billing
- Tracking lab cases
- Maintaining proper patient records
- Reporting non-compliance issues to the manager
- Creating a productive and collaborative environment
- Taking dental radiographs (X-rays)
- Assisting with training new dental assistants
- Performing other duties as assigned by the dental office manager or supervisor
Qualifications
The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required for this position.
- Education & Experience: High School Diploma or equivalent; one year of customer service and/or clinical experience; completion of a California Dental Board approved Dental Assistant Program
- Certification: Certification in Dental Practice Act, Infection Control, Basic Life Support, and Radiation Safety
- Skills & Knowledge: Professional conduct, teamwork, proficiency in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, familiarity with Electronic Health Record Systems, multitasking, prioritization, initiative, good attendance, communication skills, patient service, ability to lift 20 pounds, endurance to sit, stand, walk for 7-8 hours, adherence to policies and procedures
Physical Demands and Work Environment
The work environment is characteristic of a clinical setting. Employees must frequently sit, handle, feel, stand, walk, reach, and occasionally lift/move up to 20 pounds. Specific vision abilities include close, distance, and focus adjustment. Hearing and speech are necessary for communication. The environment can be noisy, and employees may contact individuals in crisis or exposed to bodily fluids and hazardous chemicals.
