Job summary

CVHS HEALTH SERVICES in Charles City, VA seeks a full-time Dental Assistant to coordinate patient appointments and support chairside dental care. The role emphasizes efficient patient flow and accurate charting within a collaborative team.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

• Schedules and coordinates patient appointments when necessary.
• Maintains efficiency of the dental department through proper patient flow and business transactions.
• Works with office staff to arrange transportation for patients needing it.
• Obtains medical records of patients when requested by practitioners.
• Maintains and processes dental lab bills and documents.
• Answers patients' questions about the dental department and services.
• Accompanies patients from waiting area to operatory and prepares for the dentist.
• Arranges dental instruments and supplies for procedures.
• Assists dentists at chairside during treatment using 4-handed dentistry.
• Records updates and ensures accuracy on dental charts.
• Determines vital signs and assists in obtaining medical history.
• Keeps operatories stocked and maintains equipment.
• Performs routine maintenance and cleaning of equipment.
• Coordinates referrals and manages waiting lists.
• Ensures lab work is received before appointments.

Essential Job Functions

• Schedules and coordinates patient appointments when necessary.
• To maintain efficiency of the dental department through proper patient flow and business transactions.
• Works with office staff when necessary, to assure that transportation arrangements are made for patients needing them.
• Obtains medical records of patients when requested by practitioners.
• Maintains dental lab bills and packs and mails dental lab work.
• Answers patients' questions concerning the dental department and instructs them on use of services.
• Accompanies patient from waiting area to operatory, seats patients, and prepares patient as necessary for arrival of dentist.
• Arranges dental instruments and supplies at chairside appropriately for the procedures to be performed.
• Assists dentists at chairside during treatment and examination procedures, using 4-handed dentistry.
• Receives Nomad operator certificate if necessary.
• Needs a valid radiation certification accepted by the Virginia Dental Association.
• Records on dental charts verbal observations of the dentist during examinations using correct terminology with strict attention to accuracy.
• Determines vital signs of patients, assists in obtaining a medical history, and delivers post-operative instructions.
• Keeps the operatories stocked with disposable supplies and in good order.
• Performs routine maintenance and cleaning of equipment.
• Performs dental laboratory work as directed, including fabricating and trimming models and fabricating custom impression trays.
• Maintains and updates patient waiting list.
• Coordinates referrals.
• Insures that laboratory work has been received for appointed patients before their appointment time.
• Requisitions supplies as needed.
• Supports a team-based approach to patient-centered medical care.
• Attends work as scheduled.
• Performs other duties as assigned by Supervisor.

Education, Training and Qualifications

• Dental Radiation Safety Certification required.
• Experience as a dental assistant desirable.
• Typing skills required; secretarial experience preferred.
• CPR Certification, preferred.
