DELI CLERK
PURPOSE STATEMENT: To maximize sales and profit in the Deli Department through courteous customer service.
SIGNIFICANT JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Greet all customers, respond to questions/requests, and explain store policies courteously.
- Wrap, package, and sell products such as sandwiches, pizza, salads, sliced fruits, vegetables, meats, cheese, desserts, party trays, garnishes, and fried foods.
- Process customer purchases accurately using electronic cash registers, scanners, and scales.
- Review the department's Communication Board daily for updates and follow posted guidelines for sampling and announcements.
- Prepare and organize the cooler/freezer/preparation area for receiving merchandise, verify deliveries, inspect for damages, and code-date all items.
- Adhere to health codes and regulations; clean department areas regularly and safely.
- Transport cases to sales floor or storage, open cases, and stock products in designated areas, checking for freshness and proper rotation.
- Ensure safety of self, customers, and co-workers by following safety rules and reporting hazards.
- Operate equipment such as balers, slicers, scales, fryers, and other machinery safely and correctly.
- Evaluate product quality, manage damaged or unsalable items, and reprocess or markdown as needed.
- Monitor and record cooler and freezer temperatures four times daily.
- Report out-of-stock conditions promptly.
- Stock and maintain display cases and counters throughout the store.
- Perform additional tasks as assigned during peak periods or when covering for absent staff.
QUALIFICATIONS:
REQUIRED:
- Basic math skills and ability to count.
- Ability to give and receive complex verbal instructions.
- Stable work and educational history.
- Ability to read and write English; interpret instructions and labels.
- Judgment skills for product placement and customer interaction.
- Ability to open and stock cases without damaging products.
- Capable of labeling products clearly and accurately.
- Good interpersonal communication skills.
PREFERRED:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Prior related work experience.
- Experience operating equipment like balers, slicers, and cleaning tools (must be 18+ for certain machinery).
TASKS OF THE JOB
This position requires:
- Mobility for receiving, stocking, building displays, and cleaning within a maximum of 100 yards.
- Working on tile or concrete surfaces for up to 8 hours.
- Lifting up to 50 lbs. to overhead heights and moving similar weight over distances.
- Climbing ladders and shelving up to 3 feet high.
- Handling cash, vouchers, and store supplies.
- Using tools and equipment such as sign placement, case cutters, and maintenance machinery.
- Responding to customer and co-worker questions, and operating store systems and equipment.

Indoor work with temperature variations, dust, and humidity from equipment and storage areas.
