Under the direction of the department head, lead clerk, and/or manager, the Deli Clerk assists customers with requests and questions, provides product samples, prepares, prices, stocks, inventories products, and proactively maintains the appearance of the Deli department.
Responsibilities
- Greets and assists customers with requests and special orders; provides samples; accurately prepares orders—including sandwiches; lifts and carries up to 50 lbs and stands for extended periods.
- Provides friendly and courteous service, maintains product knowledge, answers customer questions, conducts suggestive selling, and obtains supervisor assistance when needed.
- Stays abreast of store specials and sales/marketing promotions, informs customers of offerings, and answers questions about specials.
- Receives, unpacks, and stores deli products; obtains fresh produce from the Produce Department; prices and stocks products; monitors code dates; inventories and records spoilage or transfers; ensures the department is well stocked and faced before shift end.
- Prepares deli meats using the slicer, cuts and prepares cheeses, prepares produce for display and sale, assembles party platters, cooks soups and hot entrees, operates the steam table, fries chicken, and prepares deli sandwiches.
- Maintains the appearance of the Deli Department by cleaning displays, condiment stations, soda dispensers, beverage dispensers, floors, and equipment; washes dishes, cutlery, and utensils; follows closing protocols to store products per guidelines.
- Pursues professional developmental opportunities and contributes to corporate goals.
- Performs miscellaneous responsibilities and duties as assigned.
Essential Requirements
- Education: High school diploma or GED preferred; able to read and write at a high‑school competency level.
- Work Experience: Prior customer service and/or food handling experience.
- Work Hours: Availability to work various days and shifts, with occasional overtime.
- Other Requirements:
- Proven ability to converse in English on a one-to-one basis.
- Ability to read, understand, and follow departmental guidelines and procedures.
- Ability to read recipes and measure quantities accurately.
- Must be at least 18 years of age at employment.
- Ability to visually recognize, hear, and converse with a supervisor, co‑worker, or customer at a reasonable distance, with a corrective or supplemental aid if needed.
- Ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously.
Physical Standards
MUST be able to stand, walk, sit, crouch, twist, reach overhead, grip, pinch, move wrists, use finger dexterity, squat, kneel, climb, run/sprint, lift from floor to waist, lift overhead, carry two‑handed, carry one‑handed, push/pull, and lift and carry up to 50 lbs while standing for extended periods.
