Job summary

ECO Magazine seeks a Deep Pelagic Biologist to join our oceanography research team. The role involves fieldwork aboard seagoing vessels, laboratory analyses, and collaboration with FIU on specimen preparation and genetic analyses on deep-pelagic crustaceans.

The candidate will assist with data processing, maintain meticulous field and lab records, and contribute to manuscript preparation and outreach activities. Some travel and weekend work may be required.

Qualifications

  • Extensive research experience with deep pelagic scientific techniques aboard seagoing research vessels.
  • Experience with general laboratory upkeep, purchasing, safely storing and handling chemicals and lab supplies; ability to maintain frozen specimen libraries.
  • Taxonomic and morphological familiarity with identifying, sorting, and dissecting marine specimens across molluscs, fishes, crustaceans, and gelatinous animals.
  • Knowledge of the scientific process in marine biology and ecology, especially deep pelagic environments.
  • Experience with data processing and computing software, including R, PRIMER, MS Word and Excel.
  • Ability to contribute to field data collection and maintain detailed fieldwork records.
  • Ability to contribute to research projects through data analysis, interpretation, and writing in collaboration with lab members and supervisor.
  • Experience with ultra-low-temperature freezers and general lab equipment operation, maintenance, and upkeep.
  • Strong verbal and written communication and professional interpersonal skills; ability to work with diverse teams in seagoing environments.

Responsibilities

  • Under minimal supervision, support diverse deep-sea biological research projects with PI.
  • Plan and execute research activities including seagoing fieldwork, data collection, lab experiments, data analysis, and report writing.
  • Coordinate with FIU Bracken-Grissom’s Laboratory for collaboration and genetic analyses.
  • Perform dissections, sample processing of pelagic specimens, and data collection of environmental and biological data.
  • Provide leadership to ensure a clean, safe, and organized lab environment; contribute to teaching activities and outreach as needed.
