Job summary

Bristol Bay Fuels is seeking a deckhand to operate and maintain equipment on the deck of a vessel. You will perform general deck duties, handle mooring lines, perform maintenance, and assist in lifeboat operations while adhering to safety standards.

Responsibilities include painting, lubricating machinery, splicing cables, and standing watches. This role requires physical endurance and the ability to perform tasks in harsh weather conditions.

Qualifications

  • Merchant Mariner Credential: preferably Able Seaman.
  • First Aid CPR is required.
  • TWIC is required.
  • Valid Driver's license is required.
  • High school Diploma or GED is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Perform general deck duties to help ensure safe vessel operation.
  • Handle lines to moor vessel to wharves, tie up vessel, or rig towing lines.
  • Sweep and wash decks, perform maintenance like rust removal.
  • Lower and man lifeboat in emergencies.
  • Stand steering watches or lookout watches while underway.
  • Paint lifeboats, decks, and superstructure of vessel.
  • Lubricate machinery and equipment.
  • Splice and repair cables and ropes with hand tools.
  • Examine and tighten tow cables to ensure vessels are snug.
  • Assist with cooking meals.
  • Other duties as assigned.

This position operates and maintains equipment on the deck of a vessel.

Essential Duties & Job Functions:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.   • Perform general deck duties to help ensure safe, efficient operation of the vessel.
  • Performs any combination of following duties aboard watercraft: Handles lines to moor vessel to wharves, tie up vessel to another vessel, or rig towing lines.
  • Sweeps and washes decks, using broom, brushes, mops, and firehose. Performs other maintenance duties as needed such as rust removal.
  • Lowers and man's lifeboat in case of emergencies.
  • Stands steering watches or lookout watches while underway.
  • Paints lifeboats, decks, and superstructure of vessel, using brush.
  • Lubricates machinery and equipment.
  • Splices and repairs cables and ropes, using hand tools.
  • Examines cables that holds vessels in tow and tightens cables to ensure vessels are snug.
  • Assist with cooking meals.
  • Other duties as assigned.

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts and severe outside weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. Hearing protection and the use of safety eyewear is required in most working situations.

  • MOBILITY: Must be able to access all controls and all parts of machinery for service. Must be able to push/pull 50 pounds for 20 feet.
  • HEARING: Must be able to hear audible safety alarms.
  • VISUAL ACUITY: Must be adequate to perform above listed tasks in a safe manner and take hand signals from ground man or flag man.
  • LIFTING: Must be able to routinely lift up to 70 pounds from floor to waist, 50 pounds from wait level to shoulder height and carry 70 pounds for 20 feet.
