Job summary

Battletown Materials LLC in Kentucky seeks a deckhand to operate vessels and manage auxiliary tasks on site.

You will perform maintenance, assist engineers, monitor fuel, follow safety regs, and report issues to keep operations safe and efficient.

Qualifications

• Education: High School Diploma or GED.
• 2–5 years deckhand experience preferred.
• TWIC card or ability to obtain one.
• Outdoor quarry environment; exposure to dust, noise, weather.
• Regulatory compliance with MSHA and Coast Guard requirements.

Responsibilities

• Makeup tow, switch barge, operate winches and ratchets and couplings.
• Ride the head of the tow as a lookout.
• Handle line, including splicing and throwing lines.
• Shingle minor cracks in vessels.
• Assist in port to engineer and manage scheduled maintenance and engine room log.
• Assist in repair of machinery and equipment on board the vessel.
• Report equipment failures or hazards to the pilot-on-watch.
• Monitor fuel and operating fluids onboard and report findings.
• Ensure fire extinguishers are charged and tagged.
• Maintain clean, safe personal quarters and workspace.

• This position does fall under Coast guard regulatory authority and will thus be required to follow all applicable laws and regulations including but not limited to:
  • Obtaining a TWIC card
  • Random Drug testing
  • PPE
  • Training in the operation of the vessel
• In addition, we are a MSHA regulated site and this position will be responsible for adhering to all those regulations as well.
• Primary Function
  • This position will be responsible for all auxiliary operations of operating the vessel including but not limited to
    • Makeup tow, switch barge, operate winches and ratchets and couplings
    • Ride the head of the toe as a lookout
    • Handle line (including splicing and throwing lines)
    • Shingle minor cracks in vessels
    • Assist in the port to engineer and managing scheduled maintenance and engine room log
    • Assist in the repair of all machinery and equipment on board the vessel
    • Report all equipment failures or hazardous conditions to the pilot-on-watch
    • Monitor the amount of fuel and operating fluid (fuel, lube, oil, water, bilge, etc.) onboard and report findings to the pilot-on-watch
    • Ensure that all fire extinguishers are properly charged and tagged
    • Maintain a clean and tidy personal quarter and workspace free of spillage and equipment that is not in use
    • Grease rudders, jockey bars, bushings and deck fittings
    • Dewater barges as necessary
    • Training new employees on Battletown Materials practices
    • Safety sensitive responsibilities including first responder duties
    • Perform engine room maintenance
    • All other duties as directed by the pilot or person-in-charge or his designee
    • Perform all tasks in accordance with Battletown Materials safety and environmental policies

Qualifications

• Education: High School Diploma or GED
• Experience: 2–5 years deckhand experience preferred
• Skills:
• Strong knowledge of fleeting, barges, tie offs, securing loads
• Strong work ethic
• Required Licenses: TWIC card or ability to get one,
• Preferred: Full or Limited captains license allowing operation of our vessel in our region.
• Outdoor quarry environment; exposure to dust, noise, vibration, and weather conditions.
• Frequent field presence required to oversee active mining areas.

Physical Demands

A successful deckhand should be able to do the following several times in a day:

• Fit through normal barge manhole that is 56.5 inches in circumference
• Ascend and descend an 18-foot ladder while wearing a personal flotation device (PFD)
• Ascend and descend 4 flights of stairs without stopping or losing balance
• Transition to and from a small boat from a towing vessel with a 30-inch change in elevation while wearing a PFD
• Step up and down a 12-inch change in elevation without stopping or losing balance
• Walk safely on uneven decks while always maintaining balance
• Walk 1200 feet while carrying a 50-pound load
• Lift with legs to pick up a 50-pound load to the shoulder
• Step over deck fittings and objects on deck while maintaining balance
• Reach up 90 degrees with both arms while sitting and standing and pull downward
• Lift 75 pounds from waist to overhead
• Work in confined spaces for extended periods of time
