Job summary

Cruz Marine LLC seeks an Able Seaman for Alaskan waters. You will stand watch, monitor obstructions in the vessel’s path, measure water depth, and steer via the bridge wheel or emergency gear as directed by the captain, mate, or pilot.

You will rig, overhaul, and store cargo-handling gear, perform maintenance on painted surfaces, and maintain lines and ship equipment. The position is full-time seasonal, with 12-hour days, seven days a week, returning to shore when the season ends.

Qualifications

• Merchant Mariner Credential with AB Special endorsement is required.
• TWIC card and valid driver's license are required.
• Ability to read and understand operating instructions and memos.
• Experience towing vessels and related equipment is preferred.

Responsibilities

• Stand watch to detect obstructions in the path of the vessel.
• Measure water depth and operate bridge controls as directed.
• Rig, overhaul, and store cargo-handling gear and rigging.

Schedule: 12 Hour Days, 7 days a week. Work is on a seasonal basis.

Summary

Stand watch to look for obstructions in path of vessel, measure water depth, turn wheel on bridge, or use emergency equipment as directed by captain, mate, or pilot. Break out, rig, overhaul, and store cargo-handling gear, stationary rigging, and running gear. Perform a variety of maintenance tasks to preserve the painted surface of the ship and to maintain line and ship equipment.

Essential Functions

• Adhere to the QSEMS (Quality, Safety, and Environmental Management System) including the Quality Assurance Manual (QAM) and the Operating Procedures Manual (OPM).
• Handle lines to moor vessel to wharves, tie up vessel to another vessel, or rig towing lines.
• Lower and man lifeboat in case of emergencies.
• Move controls or turn hand wheels to raise or lower passenger or vehicle landing ramps.
  Load or unload material from barges, scows, and dredges.
• Lubricate machinery and equipment.
• Examine cables that hold vessels in tow and tighten cables to ensure vessels are snug.
• Splice and repair cables and ropes.
• Paint lifeboats, decks, and superstructure of vessel.
• Insert blocks under wheels of vehicles to prevent them from moving.
• Stand steering watches or lookout watches while underway.
• Sweep and wash decks.
• Work aboard watercraft, such as dredges, ferryboats, scows, and river boats.
• Performing other related duties, as assigned.

Education and/or Experience

Minimum:

• Merchant Mariner Credential

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities

• Knowledge and experience tow towing vessels and all methods of towing.
• Knowledge of and ability to use Internet software and the ability to use Microsoft Office and email.
• Skill in controlling operations of equipment or systems on the vessel.
• Ability to read and understand simple instructions, short correspondence and memos.
• Ability to add and subtract two digit numbers and multiply and divide with 10’s and 100’s.
• Skill in problem solving and reacting quickly with rapidly changing situations.
• Knowledge of general machines and tools, which include: anchor lines, anchor rollers, depth gauges, hoists, marine signaling systems, and winches.
• Western Alaska experience
