The position involves mooring, docking, cargo handling, routine maintenance, and adherence to safety regulations. Candidates should have a HS diploma or GED, basic mechanical knowledge, and strong teamwork and communication skills.

Responsibilities

• Perform and support the day-to-day vessel operations to assist with safe and efficient operation of the vessel.
• Handle mooring lines and assist with docking, towing, and anchoring operations.
• Maintain deck cleanliness and organization; assist in shift operations and securing lines under supervision.
• Assist with cargo operations including loading/unloading of materials and containers.
• Perform routine maintenance such as chipping, painting, cleaning, repairs, and lubrication.
• Operate basic deck equipment like towing winches and capstans; report safety concerns per policy.
• Stand watch on vessel when underway and participate in drills and safety procedures.

Robert B. Our Marine Division invites applications for a Deckhand to join our growing team. This is a great entry-level opportunity for those interested in gaining experience in the field. The Deckhand performs a wide variety of tasks in support of safe vessel operations in accordance with established regulations. The position may perform work on tugboats, freight boat or other Company vessels, both onboard and onshore.

• Perform and support the day-to-day vessel operations to assist with ensuring the safe and efficient operation of the vessel.
• Handle mooring lines. Assist with docking, undocking, towing and anchoring operations/procedures. Maintain tow gear and maintain proper tension during transit.
• Ensure decks are clear of hazards. Assist with maintaining general vessel cleanliness and organization. Assist in shift assist operations including securing lines under supervision.
• Assist with cargo operations. Assist with loading/unloading of materials, recycling/trash containers/bulk waste or other cargo.
• Perform routine maintenance including chipping, painting, cleaning, repairs, and lubrication. Perform general maintenance and support duties while vessel is in the port or in the shipyard. Assist with boatyard facility duties including operating yard equipment (if certified). Assist contractors and trades with their duties.
• Operate basic deck equipment such as towing winches, capstans, and bitts. Clean and maintain deck and equipment.
• Assist in emergency situations as directed.
• As assigned, stand watch on vessel while vessel is underway.
• Participate in drills including practice safety drills.
• Ensure compliance with federal/state/USCG safety regulations. Report safety concerns forward per Company policy.

General Qualifications

• Previous deckhand, commercial boating, towing or related experience preferred, but not required.
• HS Diploma or GED equivalent
• Basic mechanical and maintenance knowledge.
• Familiarity with maritime safety rules and vessel communication protocol.
• Excellent communication skills to be able to effectively work as part of a small team/crew in a fast-paced environment; ability to work under pressure.
• The position may require long shifts (over 12 hours with rotational schedules).

The position requires the successful completion of a background check and other pre-employment screenings.
