Job summary

Callan Marine is seeking a Deckhand to support outside deck and placement area duties, including rope handling on dredge/boats, cleaning pumps and cutters, and assisting in pipeline installations over water and onshore. The role reports to the Leverman or Dredge Captain as needed.

Responsibilities

  • Handle ropes and cables in the dredge and boating process.
  • Clean pumps/cutters using small hand tools.
  • Keep equipment neat and in order (ropes coiled, areas cleaned and painted).
  • Assist in installation of pipelines over water and onshore.
  • Maintain housekeeping on floating equipment and placement areas.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
  • Participate in safety and environmental initiatives.

Job description

Summary

The Deckhand is responsible for outside deck or placement area site duties as assigned. They may consist of rope handling on dredge/boats, pump/cutter cleaning, painting, pressure washing, and general duties as assigned. Duties may also include work at shore-based operations, spoil areas and placement areas.

This position will be under the direct supervision of the Leverman. In the absence of the Leverman, the Deckhand reports to the Dredge Captain.

  • Handling of ropes and cables in the dredge and boating process
  • Cleaning of pumps/cutters, utilizing small hand tools
  • Ensure equipment is kept in a neat and orderly manner (items where they belong, ropes coiled neatly, interior and exterior cleaned and painted, etc.)
  • Assisting in installation of pipelines over the water and onshore
  • Maintaining housekeeping on floating equipment and placement area site
  • Performs other related duties as assigned
  • Participates in Safety and Environmental initiatives that will contribute to compliance of State/Federal regulations and improve existing Company programs.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS

The employee must have:

  • Prior Deckhand/Laborer experience
  • Open water experience
  • Experience with operation of anchor barge winch equipment
  • Ability to comply with safety rules and regulations.
  • Ability to work effectively and efficiently
  • Ability to work away from home at remote project locations for extended durations.
  • Must be reliable and motivated.
  • Ability to obtain TWIC.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with co-workers and supervisors.
  • Competencies: stress management/composure, teamwork, results driven.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

The employee must be able to perform the essential functions of the job with or without reasonable workplace accommodation.

The individual must also be able to wear and properly utilize appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) to work or visit within areas where it is required. This includes hard hat, safety glasses, life vest, respirators, ear plugs, steel toed shoes, personal flotation devices (PFD's), or other protective equipment as required by the work performed and location the work is being done.

In addition, a Deckhand must also be capable of:

  • Walking, stepping, climbing, or otherwise moving from one location on the job site to another, which may be of varying heights and access parameters.
  • Standing, stooping, twisting, bending, crouching, kneeling, squatting, climbing, or sitting repetitively and/or for long periods of time.
  • Repetitive movements by feet, shoulders, arms, wrists, hands and back in performance of work.
  • Must be able to lift and carry 30lbs individually. Anything greater than 30lbs and up to 60lbs will require additional lifting means.
  • Must be able to push and pull at peak force of 150lbs.
  • Climbing stairs and/or vertical ladders of a height of 6ft or greater.
  • Working in confined work areas and/or elevated heights.
  • Adapting to temperature changes, outdoor conditions, and prolonged exposure to dusty, wet, or humid conditions, loud noises, and vibration.
