Deering High School in Portland, ME, seeks an enthusiastic, experienced Debate Team Advisor for the 2026-27 season (mid-September to mid-April). The candidate should be capable of engaging students from diverse backgrounds, building on the team’s strong culture, and guiding members toward continued success in DHS-affiliated tournaments and MPA events.
The role requires after-school commitments 2–3 days per week at DHS, with travel for some Maine competitions.
Deering H.S. is currently looking for an enthusiastic, experienced and knowledgeable candidate to serve as our Debate Team Advisor for the 2026-27 season that runs from mid-September to mid-April. Candidate must be flexible to work within a cooperative team environment, be skilled at enaging and supporting students from diverse backgrounds and welcome the chance to build off the DHS Debate Team's strong culture, engaged student membership and a history of successes and mutiple State Championships in several disciplines of Debate and at MPA events. Previous H.S. or college Debate Team advising and educational leadership/teaching experience is ideal, but not required.
The DHS Debate Team practices after school 2-3 days/week at DHS in Portland, Maine, and competes in various MPA and Maine Forensic Association (https://www.maineforensic.org) Speech and Debate events, which can include bus travel/trips throughout Maine on some Saturdays. Schedule can vary based on advisor's and students' availability (Most debate events fall during the fall/winter terms.)
Applicants must hold a current State of Maine Department of Education (DOE) Criminal History Records Check (CHRC) and current DOE fingerprinting paperwork prior to employment. EOE. Looking to hire our new advisor for DHS Debate ASAP, and by October 1st.
