Job summary

The Oakwood School is seeking a Part-Time Debate Coach to mentor high school students in our expanding forensics program. The role includes traveling to and judging at local, state, and national tournaments, with travel expenses covered. You will assist in planning team strategy and logistics for events.

Weekly practices, research and case-building, and delivering lectures on current issues are part of the role. Approximately ten hours of tutoring weekly are expected.

Qualifications

• A bachelor’s degree is preferred but not required.
• 3–4 years of competitive debate experience in Public Forum, Policy, or LD formats.

Responsibilities

• Travels to and judges local/state/national tournaments and handles travel logistics.
• Plans team competition strategy and coordinates event logistics.
• Leads weekly in-person practices and debate drills.
• Provides approximately ten hours of tutoring per week.
• Represents the school at meetings with area coaches.

JOB SUMMARYThe Part-Time Debate Coach will mentor high school students in our expanding forensics program and reports to the Head Debate Coach.KEY RESPONSIBILITIESTravels to and judges at local, state, and/or national circuit tournaments, either in California or throughout the country, monthly (reasonable airfare, hotel, and meal expenses covered).Assists in planning the team competition strategy and with the event logistics at competitions (help reserve airfare and hotel accommodations).Aids in research and case-building, attends in-person weekly practices, and leads debate drills.Prepares and delivers lectures regarding current issues and events.Provides approximately ten hours of tutoring per week.Represents the school at meetings and other official administrative functions with area coaches.PHYSICAL DEMANDSWhile performing the essential functions of this job, the incumbent must be able to do the following: stand for extended periods; sit for extended periods; bend and reach for filing and other job-related functions; climb up and down stairs; bend, stoop, and lift to move and retrieve materials; pull, push, and lift; reach both above and below shoulder height. Specific visual abilities include close vision, color vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Must be able to visually inspect work.
