The Dean of Students is a vital member of the school leadership team, fully dedicated to the mission and values of the school. This role is critical in fostering a positive, supportive, and disciplined environment that promotes academic excellence, personal growth, and community responsibility.
The Dean is responsible for managing student affairs across multiple departments, coordinating services for students of concern, overseeing academic and behavioral policies, and collaborating with faculty, staff, parents, and students to ensure a productive and safe campus culture. By shaping and enriching the school culture, the Dean has the opportunity to make a profound impact on student development and the overall success of the school community.
Key Responsibilities
Academic Affairs:
- Oversee and manage student attendance.
- Enforce policies regarding Artificial Intelligence use, plagiarism, and academic dishonesty.
- Collaborate with the Registrar on student records and academic-related concerns.
- Work closely with the Admissions Office on student placement and open houses.
- Provide guidance and support for students struggling academically or personally, facilitating appropriate interventions and communication.
Behavioral And Disciplinary Oversight
- Maintain oversight of student discipline, including managing behavioral holds, suspension procedures, and restorative practices.
- Lead weekly meetings with students on Restoration Plans and oversee the completion of these plans with the Restoration Council.
- Ensure proper record-keeping and follow-through for detention, suspension, and behavioral concerns.
- Coordinate with faculty, coaches, and parents when disciplinary actions affect student participation in extracurricular activities, such as athletics.
- Manage and enforce policies related to tech use, drug and alcohol testing, and other major disciplinary actions.
Student Support Services
- Supervise weekly "Students of Concern" meetings, addressing the needs of students who require academic, emotional, or behavioral support.
- Coordinate with Counseling Services, including the Mentor Program schedule and student wellness resources.
- Oversee attendance for college visits and communication with students on potential college applications.
- Support and chaperone the organization of school retreats, service programs, and other student life events.
Christian Life
- Restoration Plans: Collaborate with Mark on Restoration Plans to monitor students' progress, ensuring alignment with school expectations.
Advisory And Student Engagement
- Serve as an advisor to 10 students, providing individual guidance, support, and regular check-ins.
- Lead attendance at Monday Assemblies, Wednesday Chapels, and Friday Advisory Groups.
- Maintain consistent communication with parents and teachers regarding student progress and concerns.
- Assign advisory groups to seating arrangements in the Chapel and Carson for Christian life activities.
- Coordinate student leadership activities, including the Class Council, Prefect Board, and Workjob program.
- Oversee the application process for student leadership roles and ensure appropriate assignment of student jobs for the summer
Student Activities & Leadership
- Organize and maintain the schedule for school assemblies, including working with speakers and technical support staff.
- Oversee student-led initiatives, including the Character Program, Service Program, and MLK Day events.
- Coordinate diversity, unity, and belonging initiatives, particularly addressing racial and social issues among students.
- Work closely with faculty and the Workjob Prefect to monitor and manage student work programs and resolve attendance concerns.
Administrative And Operational Support
- Manage school-wide schedule changes, including communication regarding lunch schedules, assemblies, and other special events.
- Maintain accurate records, including attendance logs, discipline records, and student communications.
- Coordinate with various departments such as HR, facilities, security, and tech for the smooth operation of student life programs.
- Participate in employee interviews and review processes for new staff within the division.
Campus Safety & Well-being
- Oversee health center protocols, including managing student drug testing, attendance issues, and suspension student accommodations.
- Ensure coordination with facilities to address campus issues, set up for events, and monitor the well-being of students in the health center.
- Lead or coordinate fire drills, lockdown drills, and bus drills to ensure safety preparedness for all students.
Diversity, Unity, And Belonging
- Lead initiatives related to diversity, unity, and belonging, working with students and faculty to ensure all students feel supported and valued.
- Collaborate with faculty and staff on diversity programs, events, and student services to promote a unified and inclusive community.
Other Duties As Assigned
- Collaborate with the Director of Residential Life & Activities to manage boarding students who earn Restoration Plans and facilitate weekly meetings for students in need of additional guidance.
- Provide leadership and support across all aspects of student life, ensuring that students' needs are met holistically and spiritually, and their academic, behavioral, and social well-being is prioritized.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree required; Master's degree in Education, Student Affairs, or a related field preferred.
- Previous experience in student affairs, academic advising, or a related role in an educational setting.
- Strong interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively with faculty, staff, students, and parents.
- Experience with student discipline, restorative practices, and behavioral interventions.
- Knowledge of current educational trends, including AI policies, tech policies, and student mental health resources.
