The Dean will maintain strong interpersonal skills and set clear expectations for conduct by upholding and communicating BART’s core values: purpose, curiosity, effort, integrity, reflection, and respect. This position supports daily school operations—particularly those related to attendance, discipline, and student activities—and assists in programming for classroom management and PBIS strategies. The Dean of Students also helps maintain a safe and secure school environment, including managing PBIS, building supervision, safety planning, student conduct, discipline management, and community resource referrals. This is a school-year position reporting to the Principal.

  • Maintain and update, as needed, the school discipline matrix in collaboration with the Assistant Principal.
  • Monitor incident reports and behavioral referrals to respond promptly to concerns.
  • Teach and re-teach behavioral expectations, including creating reflections and lessons as consequences.
  • Assign appropriate consequences for infractions.
  • Coordinate with counselors and administration to schedule restorative meetings.
  • Maintain accurate records and update logs regularly.
  • Investigate incidents thoroughly, including interviews with involved students and staff.
  • Communicate with families about student behavior and attend family meetings.
  • Conduct investigations into civil rights violations, harassment, bullying, etc., with proper documentation.
  • Handle juvenile court filings, CRA’s, and referrals to local agencies.
  • Assist in managing restrictions, seclusion, and student separation protocols.
  • Coordinate daily communication with bus drivers regarding bus behavior.

Oversee School Detentions and In-school Suspensions:

  • Assign and monitor detention and ISS, ensuring students serve their time.
  • Develop accountability and reconciliation activities to promote growth and decision-making.
  • Supervise detention and ISS sessions directly as needed.

Establishing and Maintaining a Multi-Tiered PBIS System:

  • Work with school leaders to develop and implement PBIS practices.
  • Conduct “teach-to” sessions to reinforce expected behaviors in various settings.
  • Observe classrooms to assess PBIS and management systems.
  • Implement behavior intervention plans when necessary.
