Job description

Overview

The Director of Nursing will work as a full-time nurse, providing overall supervision to all nurses and programs related to medical care in conjunction with OPWDD and The Salvation Army DDS programs. The role oversees a maximum of 96 persons supported and supervises an average of five nurses, including three full-time and two part-time staff. Responsibilities include ensuring quality assurance through routine audits, maintaining compliance with regulations, and working with department heads, staff, residents, and families to improve medical services. The Director will also review resident progress, evaluate business procedures, and manage complex medical conditions across multidisciplinary teams. Strong analytical, organizational, and time management skills are essential.

Responsibilities

  1. Maintain strong communication skills, both written and verbal, with keen attention to detail; ability to speak, read, and write English.
  2. Have access to reliable transportation.
  3. Exhibit critical thinking and sound judgment.
  4. Handle confidential information professionally.
  5. Contribute to strategic planning, implement standards, resolve problems, and improve systems.
  6. Establish rapport with patients to identify service requirements.
  7. Schedule, assign, and follow up on nursing staff work.
  8. Create a compassionate environment supporting patients and families.
  9. Promote patient independence through education and counseling.
  10. Provide information to patients and healthcare teams.
  11. Utilize multidisciplinary strategies to resolve patient needs.
  12. Maintain documentation per OPWDD guidelines.
  13. Collaborate with management to achieve clinical outcomes.
  14. Travel to facility locations for management support and audits.
  15. Educate staff regularly on quality assurance and regulations.
  16. Develop and oversee nursing processes across DDS sites.
  17. Assist with compliance surveys and risk management.
  18. Monitor and improve facility systems such as falls, infection control, and discharge processes.
  19. Train staff on quality assurance and regulatory issues.
  20. Identify risks and develop mitigation systems.
  21. Work with quality assurance and administrative teams on improvement projects.
  22. Collaborate with medical, nursing, and administrative leadership.
  23. Manage workload efficiently while maintaining high standards.
  24. Review all medical records and medication documentation for compliance.
  25. Provide training and write administrative actions for staff corrections.
  26. Participate in hiring, supervision, and reporting of nursing staff.
  27. Ensure program coverage and assess individuals as needed.
  28. Attend training to stay compliant and informed.
  29. Participate in discharge planning, care development, and committee meetings.
  30. Engage with up to 96 persons supported and oversee nursing staff and residences.

Qualifications

  • Experience in OPWDD-certified homes, community residences, and nursing homes.
  • First Aid and CPR certifications preferred.
  • Respect and consideration for residents.
  • Current NYS Registered Nurse license.
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing required; Master’s preferred.
  • Supervisory experience required.
  • On-call availability via phone and email 24/7.
  • Valid driver’s license with ability to drive large vehicles, including wheelchairs or 15-seat vans.
