Job summary

The Division of Criminal Justice in Hartford, CT is seeking a DCJ Juvenile Investigator to conduct investigations related to juvenile delinquency offenses and Families With Service Needs petitions. The position works Monday to Friday, 37.5 hours per week, with possible travel within the state.

Responsibilities include screening and prioritizing incoming files, obtaining documents, locating individuals, preparing case synopses, and reporting to prosecutors while assisting victims with case

Qualifications

• Two (2) years of experience as a law enforcement officer.
• A Bachelor’s degree in criminal justice or a related field may be substituted for the General Experience.
• Experience using computers to work with law enforcement agencies to secure and manage digital evidence such as photographs, videos, 911 calls, and recordings from body and dashboard cameras.

Introduction

The State of Connecticut, Division of Criminal Justice (DCJ) is responsible for the investigation and prosecution of all criminal matters in the State of Connecticut. It is an independent agency of the executive branch of state government, established under the Constitution of the State of Connecticut. The Division is composed of the Office of the Chief State's Attorney, located in Rocky Hill, Connecticut, and the Offices of the State's Attorneys for each of the thirteen Judicial Districts in the State of Connecticut.

About this Position

There is an opening for one (1) DCJ Juvenile Investigator (PCN# 5311) for the Hartford Judicial District, in Hartford, CT. The Hartford Judicial District includes Hartford Juvenile Court, GA 14, as well as GA 12. The assigned station will be in Hartford, CT.

This position generally works Monday through Friday, based on a 37.5-hour work week, with core hours of 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. Incumbents in this class may be required to travel within the State in the course of their daily work.

The Role

• Screen, review, prioritize and prepare incoming files;
• Ensure all case file information necessary for prosecuting is complete;
• Obtain relevant documentation (e.g. police reports, hospital records, toxicology laboratory reports, etc.);
• Locate individuals;
• Prepare case synopsis and chronology for prosecutor;
• Respond to inquiries from victims regarding case progress.

Purpose of Job Class (Nature of Work)

In the Division of Criminal Justice this class is accountable for conducting investigations related to preparation and prosecution of juvenile delinquency offenses and Families With Service Needs petitions.

Examples of Duties

• In juvenile matters interviews clients and victims;

• Maintains liaison with DCJ Inspectors, DCJ Investigators, probation staff and a variety of other persons or agencies;
• May examine and photograph crime scenes and other relevant locations;
• May arrange referral to social service agencies;
• May transport clients and victims to court proceedings;
• May testify on results of investigations;
• Performs related duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications – General Experience

Two (2) years of experience as a law enforcement officer.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with standard office procedures and computer software programs (Microsoft Office).
• Demonstrated experience in a variety of interrelated processes, tasks, and operations.
• Experience using computers to work with law enforcement agencies to secure and manage digital evidence such as photographs, videos, 911 calls, and recordings from body and dashboard cameras.

Special Requirements

Candidates must have a valid motor vehicle operator license and a vehicle available for daily business use.
