Kitchen Assistant/Cook — Meals on Wheels and More
$21+/hr (DOE)
Looking for a job that fits around your evening kitchen shift, without the late nights or split weekends? This one might be it.
Meals on Wheels and More, a program of the Whatcom Council on Aging, is hiring a Kitchen Assistant/Cook to help prepare, package, and serve meals for seniors on Orcas Island. It's steady, daytime work: 8:00am to 2:00pm (times may vary), Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. $21+/hr(DOE)
Why this job stands out:
• A schedule that works for you. With tourist season winding down, this daytime role pairs well with an evening restaurant job, or stands on its own as a stable, year-round position.
• Real benefits. No tips here, but you'll get paid vacation, 10 paid holidays a year, and an employer-funded retirement contribution after one year. Benefits that stick around after the summer crowds leave.
• Work that means something. You're not just cooking, you're helping keep our island's seniors nourished, independent, and connected. Every meal you help prepare goes to someone in our community who counts on it.
What you'll do:
Assist the Lead Cook with meal prep, portioning, and cleanup. Package meals for home delivery and satellite sites. Help with inventory, stocking, and kitchen sanitation. Keep basic records like meal counts and temperatures.
What we're looking for:
• High school diploma or GED
• Current WA State Food Worker Card
• 1+ years of culinary experience (high-volume or institutional a plus)
• Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and stay on your feet in a fast-paced kitchen
• A team player with a good attitude and strong customer service skills
