Job summary

American Airlines in Fort Worth seeks a Data Scientist/Sr Data Scientist in IT Operations Research and Advanced Analytics to drive data-driven decisions across pricing, fleet optimization, and operations.

You will manage end-to-end analytics projects, build models, deploy to production, and communicate insights to stakeholders. The role offers exposure to cloud analytics, ML, NLP, GenAI, and a collaborative team.

Qualifications

  • Master’s/PhD in a quantitative discipline or Bachelor’s with 2+ years of equivalent experience.
  • Experience with Python, R, or Java and data extraction, cleaning, and analysis.
  • Deep knowledge of statistical and machine learning techniques.
  • Experience with cloud environments and deploying models is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to identify high-impact opportunities and frame analytical problems.
  • Develop, validate, and deploy predictive/classification models using statistical methods, ML, DL, NLP, GenAI, LLMs.
  • Acquire, clean, and transform data from diverse sources; perform exploratory analysis to uncover insights.
  • Deploy models into production with IT teams and monitor continued effectiveness.

This job is a member of the Operations Research and Advanced Analytics (OR&AA) team. Positioned within the Information Technology organization, the OR&AA team at American Airlines has a long history of being on the leading edge of analytics in the airline domain. Nearly four decades ago we launched the revenue management revolution with our yield management strategy. What you'll do

As part of the OR&AA team, you will deliver data and analytics driven projects from beginning to end, by:

  • Collaborative problem-solving: partner with cross-functional teams and other analytics professionals to identify high-impact business opportunities and frame analytical problems that align with organizational goals.
  • Advanced modeling: develop, validate, and deploy models to solve complex business problems. Techniques include building predictive or classification models by employing statistical models, machine learning, deep learning, NLP, GenAI, LLMs, etc.
  • Data acquisition and preparation: obtain, clean, and transform structured and unstructured data from diverse sources to ensure robust data pipelines. Perform exploratory data analysis to uncover insights.
  • Deployment and maintenance: deploy models as proofs of concept and collaborate with IT engineers to integrate models into production environments. Monitor and maintain deployed models to ensure continued effectiveness.
  • Data visualization and reporting: create compelling dashboards and reports to communicate findings to stakeholder, translating data insights into actionable business recommendations.
  • Thought leadership and advocacy: promote data-driven decision-making across the organization by leading workshops, developing tutorials, and sharing best practices in data science.
All you'll need for success
Minimum Qualifications- Education & Prior Job Experience
  • Master’s/PhD degree or Bachelor’s degree with 2+ years of equivalent practical experience in a quantitative discipline (e.g., Computer Science, Data Science, Applied Mathematics, Statistics, Operations Research, Engineering, etc.)
  • Experience with at least one programming language (e.g., Python, R, Java)
  • Practical experience with data extraction, cleaning, and analysis
  • Deep knowledge of statistical and machine learning techniques
Preferred Qualifications- Education & Prior Job Experience
  • Practical experience in designing, building and deploying machine learning models.
  • Expertise in working with cloud environments (e.g., Azure ML, Databricks) and managing production deployments.
  • Hands-on experience with machine learning, deep learning, natural language processing (NLP), GenAI, recommender systems, experimentation (e.g., A/B testing).
  • Proficiency in SQL and data visualization (e.g., Tableau, Power BI).
  • Prior experience in consulting roles, demonstrating the ability to manage client relationships and deliver data-driven solutions.
  • Domain knowledge in the airline industry or related fields is highly desirable.

  • Demonstrated aptitude for logical analysis, problem identification, and problem solving
  • Ability to view data from different angles to employ feature engineering techniques to better represent models
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with technical and non-technical audiences
  • Ability to work on a diverse team or with a diverse range of coworkers
