Job summary

CatalogIt is seeking a technically minded Data Migration Specialist on a contractual basis to help customers move their collections data from existing systems into CatalogIt. You’ll work with databases, spreadsheets, images, and other files to understand structure, transform data, perform the import, and verify accuracy.

You’ll also work with customers to extract data, review migrations, and answer questions about results.

Qualifications

• Experience with museum collections data and relational databases.
• Ability to write and understand SQL and to map data between systems.
• Experience with TypeScript/JavaScript is useful; Python/Java/Go also valuable.
• Able to learn unfamiliar software and investigate datasets.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills; meticulous about data accuracy.
• Ability to manage multiple migrations and communicate with customers clearly.

Responsibilities

• Work directly with customer data from databases, spreadsheets, CSV files, JSON, and other sources.
• Extract data from systems such as Microsoft Access, FileMaker Pro, and other collections or database applications.
• Analyze unfamiliar databases and datasets to understand structure, relationships, and meaning.
• Map customer data to the appropriate structures and fields within CatalogIt.
• Write TypeScript/JavaScript, SQL, and other scripts to clean, normalize, manipulate, and transform data.
• Import transformed data into CatalogIt.
• Migrate customer images, documents, and other media and ensure they are associated with correct records.
• Perform QA on completed migrations, including validating record counts, mappings, and relationships.
• Identify inconsistencies, missing information, duplicates, and other migration issues.
• Work with customers to understand their data and resolve questions or ambiguities.
• Meet with customers after migrations to review results and explain mappings.
• Use AI tools to understand unfamiliar data and develop transformations.
• Document migration processes and create reusable tools for future migrations.
