Job summary

The Minnesota Star Tribune is seeking interns for a 10-week summer program at our Minneapolis headquarters. Interns work with journalists to report, analyze, and present stories in accessible formats. Strong candidates have journalism interest and some data skills, with training provided across data tools and visualization.

Interns are paid $21.25/hour and may apply for apprenticeships after the program. Applicants should expect to collaborate across the newsroom and contribute to both

Qualifications

• Strong journalism background or demonstrated interest.
• Experience using data to answer questions or tell stories.
• Working knowledge of at least one data analysis tool, such as spreadsheets, R or Python.
• Familiarity with, or interest in learning, additional data tools such as SQL or OpenRefine.
• Experience creating data visualizations using tools such as Datawrapper, Flourish, Adobe Illustrator, QGIS, or similar software.
• Basic knowledge of HTML and CSS, or experience building simple pages or digital projects.
• Some familiarity with JavaScript is useful but not required.

Responsibilities

• Report, analyze and present stories in ways that make complex information understandable and engaging.
• Work with journalists across the newsroom to report and develop data-driven stories.
• Contribute to quick-turnaround graphics tied to breaking news and longer projects.
