The Data Governance Engineer focuses on implementing and maintaining robust data governance frameworks, ensuring the accuracy, security, and regulatory compliance of data across the organization. The ideal incumbent has an advanced technical background and a deep understanding of data governance principles, enabling the organization to leverage data as a strategic asset.
Responsibilities- Design, implement, and maintain data governance frameworks, ensuring alignment with organizational goals and regulatory requirements
- Collaborate with stakeholders to define data ownership, stewardship, and accountability models
- Establish and enforce data quality standards, procedures, and metrics to ensure the accuracy, consistency, and completeness of organizational data
- Perform regular audits and assessments to identify and address data quality issues
- Develop and maintain policies, standards, and procedures for data classification, retention, and access management
- Ensure data governance practices comply with regulatory frameworks such as GLBA, PCI DSS, and NCUA guidelines
- Implement and manage data governance tools and platforms, integrating them with existing systems (e.g., data lakes, data warehouses, and BI platforms)
- Collaborate with IT and application teams to embed governance controls into data pipelines and workflows
- Partner with the Information Security team to establish and enforce controls to protect sensitive data, including encryption, anonymization, and masking techniques
- Conduct risk assessments to identify and mitigate data-related vulnerabilities
- Act as a liaison between business units, IT, and compliance teams to ensure data governance objectives are understood and implemented effectively
- Provide training and support to promote data governance awareness and best practices
- Develop dashboards and reports to monitor the effectiveness of data governance initiatives and present insights to senior leadership
- Track and communicate progress on data governance objectives, highlighting successes and areas for improvement
- Maintain knowledge and understanding of current trends, laws, and issues affecting the area of expertise
- Attend educational events to increase professional knowledge
- Complete annual compliance and info security training to understand employees' role in maintaining effective compliance and security programs
Qualifications- Bachelor’s degree in information security, data science, computer science, or a related field (A comparable combination of work experience and training may be substituted for education requirements.)
- Certifications such as CDMP (Certified Data Management Professional)-supported by DAMA, or similar are preferred
- 3+ years of experience in data governance, data management, or related fields
- Proven experience implementing data governance tools and frameworks in a medium to large organization
- Strong knowledge of data governance frameworks and best practices (e.g., DAMA DMBOK, NIST Data Framework)
- Hands-on experience with data governance tools such as Collibra, Alation, or Informatica
- Proficiency in SQL and familiarity with data visualization tools (e.g., Power BI, Tableau)
- Familiarity with co-managed security and data governance services
- Knowledge of cloud-based data storage and processing platforms (e.g., Azure, AWS)
- Ability to prioritize tasks by effectively managing competing and changing priorities to meet deadlines
- Accurate, detail-oriented, and organized with task management
- Ability to analyze and resolve difficult and often complex problems or situations
- Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills to interact effectively with members, staff, vendors, and government regulators
- Strong knowledge and understanding of credit union products, services, policies, and procedures
- Strong knowledge and understanding of regulatory compliance
- Strong knowledge and understanding of credit union computer systems and software applications required to perform job duties
