Job description

Job Description

The Advanced Electrification Testing (AET) team sits within the Technology division of Castrol. The purpose of the team is to undertake testing, provide engineering support and thought leadership to Castrol’s Research and Product Development teams. Areas of current technology development are centred on thermal management fluids for electric vehicle batteries, data centres, and electric vehicle charging equipment.

The team is responsible for a range of testing facilities at the bp Pangbourne Technology Centre in the UK and at other sites in the US. Currently a major programme of investment is in progress to transition the Pangbourne campus into a centre of excellence for electric mobility and energy technologies. In the coming years the AET team will operate a new battery testing centre with capability for climatic testing of battery cells, modules and packs and electric vehicle chargers. There is also a newly opened Data Centre Test Facility which includes several immersion tanks for server testing.

The Engineer will be co‑located within a non‑operated joint venture company in San Jose, California, that specialises in data centre cooling technology in the centre of Silicon Valley. They will be responsible for the execution of research and development projects, testing and engineering projects in support of Castrol’s data centre and thermal management business. This can encompass a wide variety of different activities ranging from executing standard test method through to development of novel and innovative testing techniques on the latest developmental equipment. The scope of the AET team current spans mobility, power and data centre industries with applications ranging from electric vehicle batteries through to data centre servers and networks. However in each the technical areas of focus in our projects are invariably thermal management and cooling, system power flow control and measurement, electronics performance, instrumentation and high‑accuracy testing to produce meaningful conclusions. Co‑located with the data centre joint venture company, the Engineer will specialise in the field of data centre liquid cooling.

The Engineer will work with the Castrol Technology and business stakeholders in all aspects of the project definition, execution and reporting. It is expected that they may work alongside and in some cases under the supervision of Senior Engineers, Expert Engineers and the AET manager. It is expected that the Engineer will actively progress their professional and personal competency development to a level that will allow them to proficiently deliver all aspects of a testing or engineering project autonomously with little to no supervision. This may include pursuit of professional accreditation from an engineering industry body.
