Job summary

Amazon is seeking a Critical Infrastructure Mechanical Engineer, Field Engineering in Lubbock, TX to provide full life‑cycle support for AWS Data Centers from design through turnover.

You will lead field projects, perform RCA reviews, and develop design solutions to increase capacity, availability, and efficiency across multiple regions. The role requires travel, field work, and collaboration with operations and design teams.

Qualifications

  • 4+ years of industrial or commercial engineering in mission‑critical facilities including data centers, power generation or oil and gas facilities.
  • 4+ years of commissioning experience.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or related field.
  • Strong engineering judgement and ability to provide recommendations despite uncertainty/ambiguity.
  • Excellent communication and writing skills, attention to detail, high quality standards.
  • Organized with ability to set priorities and meet deadlines and budget.
  • Leadership and problem‑solving skills.
  • Detail‑ and data‑oriented.
  • Experience solving problems with engineered solutions.
  • Experience researching new designs, technologies, and construction methods of data center equipment and facilities.
  • Experience reading, interpreting, and creating construction drawings, specifications, and submittal documents.
  • Basic understanding of mechanical and/or electrical equipment/design related to data centers (e.g., uninterruptible power sources, diesel generators, electrical switchgear, power distribution units, variable frequency drives, auto/static transfer switches, chillers, pumps, cooling towers, heat exchangers, CRAHs, fans, air economizers, water treatment).
  • Professional Engineer License (preferred).
  • Knowledge of building codes and regulations for your region.
  • Experience carrying design concepts through exploration, development, and into deployment or mass production.
  • Valid US driver’s license and reliable personal transportation by start date.
  • Willingness to work in both office and field environments.
  • Adaptability and inclination to get into the field to see things up close.
  • Strong commitment to diversity and inclusion.
  • Willingness to travel to multiple geographical regions.

Responsibilities

  • Troubleshoot, conduct Root Cause Analysis (RCA) and create Corrective Action (CA) documentation for site/equipment failures.
  • Directly support operational issues with ad‑hoc training, complex operating procedure reviews, including critical equipment, and event support.
  • Own the conceptual design for existing data center upgrades and design‑solutions, which add capacity, improve availability, increase efficiency and sustainability.
  • Interface with internal data center operations team, data center design engineering team, server hardware team, environmental health and safety team to promote standards that maintain consistency and reliability in services delivered.
  • Develop innovative solutions for AWS’s data centers.
  • Work on concurrent projects, sometimes in multiple geographical regions.
  • Initiate and lead engineering audits including on‑site visits within Amazon’s data centers. Produce reports outlining risks with recommended mitigations and remediations.
  • Act as resident engineer during new construction projects. Support construction, commissioning, and turnover.
  • Lead projects to fit out our data centers to meet ever‑evolving customer needs as we continue expanding our fleet to hyper‑scale.
