Job summary

Value Innovation Labs Inc. is seeking a Data Center / Fiber Optic / Structured Cabling Technician to join our facilities team. This role requires hands-on installation and support in a high-density data center environment.

You will install server racks, connect switches, test fiber and copper cabling with OTDR and power meters, and troubleshoot Layer 1 issues. You’ll coordinate with engineering and facilities and maintain clear shift handovers.

Qualifications

• Hands-on experience with fiber optics and structured cabling (Cat6A).
• Proficient in rack and stack, testing, and break-fix support.
• Experience using testing tools and physical network troubleshooting (Layer 1).
• Experience with ticketing systems.

Responsibilities

• Install server racks and network equipment; connect switches and route cabling; support rack moves and decommissioning.
• Test fiber and network circuits using OTDR and power meters to verify quality.
• Diagnose connectivity issues; replace faulty hardware and respond to outages.
• Perform preventive maintenance and inspect routing; ensure safe, clean fiber connections.
• Follow data center safety procedures, PPE/ESD, and lockout/tagout protocols.
• Collaborate with engineering, facilities, and supply chain; maintain ticket updates and handovers.

Job description

Ideal Candidate Profile:

• Data Center / Fiber Optic / Structured Cabling Technician

Core Qualifications:

• Hands-on experience in fiber optics, structured cabling (including Cat6A), rack and stack, testing, and break-fix support.
• Proficiency with testing tools (OTDR, power meters, cable testers) and physical network troubleshooting (Layer 1).
• Experience using ticketing systems.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Equipment Installation & Deployment: Install server racks and network equipment; connect switches; manage, label, and route fiber optic and copper cabling; support rack moves, upgrades, and decommissioning.
2. Network Testing: Test newly installed fiber and network circuits using OTDR and power meters to verify quality and signal strength.
3. Troubleshooting & Repair: Diagnose connectivity issues, replace faulty hardware (cables, optics, switches), and respond to critical outages.
4. Maintenance: Perform preventive maintenance, clean fiber optic connectors, inspect routing, and support new build-outs.
5. Safety & Compliance: Follow data center safety procedures, use required PPE/ESD protection, and adhere to lockout/tagout protocols.
6. Collaboration: Work with engineering, facility, and supply chain teams; maintain ticket updates and provide clear shift handovers.

Preferred Skills & Certifications:

• Experience with liquid-cooled data center racks, barcode scanning, asset tracking, and large hyperscale data centers.
• BICSI Installer or Technician certification.
• OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 certification.

Physical Requirements:

• Ability to lift 50+ lbs regularly, stand/walk for extended periods, work on ladders/lifts, and handle small components in warm data center environments.
