Surge Energy America seeks a Data Analyst, GIS to serve as the primary GIS resource for the land department, supporting land operations through geospatial data management, analysis, and maintenance. The role is based onsite in Houston, TX, and focuses on mapping tracts, leasing data, and enterprise GIS services using Portal for ArcGIS.

You will translate legal descriptions into accurate geospatial representations, ensure data consistency, and collaborate with landmen and data teams.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Geography, GIS, MIS, or related field.
  • 3+ years Oil & Gas GIS experience or equivalent.
  • Proficiency with ArcGIS Pro and Quorum GIS.
  • Strong understanding of land operations: leases, E&P, ownership, pooling.
  • Experience with geodatabase design and CRS/geodesy.

Responsibilities

  • Map tracts and agreements from legal descriptions using ArcGIS Pro and Quorum QGIS.
  • Maintain leasehold data and support land acquisition/divestiture with map production.
  • Run and validate Polygen; use Quorum Aliquot for tract subdivisions.
  • Link geometries to agreements and perform QA/QC and deviation review.
  • Develop and maintain map services, web maps, and Experience Builder apps in Portal for ArcGIS.
  • Coordinate with landmen and data teams to translate descriptions into geospatial representations.
  • Integrate data across Quorum modules and GIS platforms to maintain consistency.

Job description

The Data Analyst, GIS will serve as the primary GIS resource for the land department, supporting land operations through the management, analysis, and maintenance of geospatial data. This contract role is based in Houston, TX (onsite).

Role Overview

In this position, you will map tracts and agreements, maintain leasehold data, produce spatial analyses, and manage enterprise GIS services using Portal for ArcGIS. You will also support land acquisition and divestiture activities by translating legal descriptions into accurate geospatial representations and ensuring data consistency across GIS platforms.

Responsibilities
  • Map new tracts and agreements from legal descriptions using ArcGIS Pro and Quorum QGIS tools
  • Maintain and update leasehold using metes and bounds descriptions, attribute lease data from source documents, and support land acquisition and divestiture through map production and data integration
  • Run and validate Polygen for newly added tracts and use Quorum’s Aliquot tool to perform tract subdivisions
  • Link geometries to agreements and perform QA/QC confidence checks and deviation review
  • Complete routine data quality checks, updates, and spatial maintenance to ensure geodetic integrity, accuracy, and precision
  • Coordinate with landmen and data teams to translate legal descriptions into accurate geospatial representations of current land positions
  • Integrate data across Quorum land management modules and GIS platforms to maintain consistency and accuracy
  • Develop and maintain map services, web maps, and Experience Builder applications within Portal for ArcGIS
  • Assist in resolving IT tickets related to GIS requests, including troubleshooting and supporting the implementation of new GIS projects
  • Stay current with GIS technologies, industry trends, and best practices
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Geography, Geographic Information Systems, Management Information Systems, or a related field
  • At least 3 years of Oil and Gas professional experience
  • Experience with Quorum GIS land mapping and ESRI ArcGIS Pro
  • Strong understanding of oil and gas land operations, including leases, E&P agreements, mineral/surface ownership, and pooling/unitization
  • Proficiency in geodatabase design, spatial data management, CRS and geodesy best practices, and cartographic standards
  • Proven ability to interpret legal land descriptions, plats, and survey data
  • Working knowledge of PLSS (Public Land Survey System) and Texas Abstract survey systems
Preferred Qualifications
  • Advanced degree in Geography, Geographic Information Systems, Management Information Systems, or a related field
  • At least 5 years of professional and progressive experience in the oil and gas industry
  • Strong working experience with Quorum GIS land mapping and ESRI ArcGIS Pro
