Job description

Overview

VTG is seeking a Data Analyst to support the Submarine Industrial Base (SIB) Data team. The position is based in Washington, DC (preferred) and is eligible for remote work.

The SIB Data team collects, integrates, and analyzes supply chain, supplier, workforce, and shipyard data so that Navy leaders can see risk across the submarine industrial base and act on it. As a member of that team, the Data Analyst answers data requests, explains the resulting findings, reports results to senior leadership, and supports data engineering, data science, and data architecture teams.

What will you do?

The Data Analyst collect, queries, and maintains the data structures the SIB Data team relies upon; researches the questions stakeholders bring to the team; writes and executes ad hoc SQL and/or Python scripts to aggregate and clean data, and delivers clear, well-supported answers. The work is hands‑on and calls for strong technical data skills paired with the ability to explain results to a senior audience.

Data Analysis
  • Receive, log, and scope data requests and data calls from program leadership and stakeholders, confirming the underlying question, the intended use, and the due date.
  • Research each request across authoritative and supplemental sources; query, reconcile, and validate the data needed to answer it.
  • Develop complete, accurate responses in the form the requester needs, including written summaries, tables, and visualizations.
  • Document the sources, methods, assumptions, and limitations behind each response so that results are repeatable and defensible.
  • Maintain a library of prior requests and responses to speed future turnaround and keep answers consistent over time.
  • Develop complete, accurate responses in the form the requester needs, including written summaries, tables, and visualizations.
  • Collaborate with data engineers and analysts to ensure data accuracy, consistency, and integrity across systems.
  • Apply data standards, naming conventions, and metadata, and maintain the team's data dictionary and data catalog.
  • Assess new and existing data sources for quality, completeness, and fitness for use, and recommend corrective actions for gaps, duplication, and conflicts between sources.
  • Support the team's data governance practices, including data quality rules and proper handling and marking of Controlled Unclassified Information (CUI).
Senior leadership engagement
  • Interface directly with senior government and VTG leadership to interpret findings and explain what reports show, how confident the team is in the data, and what the results mean for the program.
  • Prepare and deliver executive summaries, briefings, and talking points tailored to a senior, non-technical audience.
  • Answer follow-up questions in real time and translate technical detail into plain language.
  • Flag trends, risks, and anomalies found in the data and suggest follow-on analysis.
  • Participate in working groups, program reviews, and technical exchange meetings as a member of the SIB Data team.
Do you have what it takes?
Required qualifications
  • Active Secret security clearance and the ability to maintain it.
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Data Science, Business, Supply Chain Management, or a related field. Four (4) additional years of relevant experience may be substituted for the degree.
  • At least four (4) years of combined experience in data architecture and data analysis, including at least three (3) years of hands‑on data modeling or data architecture work.
  • Proficiency in Python and SQL and experience working with large, multi‑source datasets.
  • Strong SQL background capable of querying, analyzing, and interpreting data across relational databases.
  • Develop complex SQL queries involving joins, subqueries, common table expressions, aggregations, window functions, and other advanced SQL techniques.
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills (formulas, pivot tables, data visualization, and automation).
  • Demonstrated experience with business intelligence and visualization tools such as Power BI or Tableau.
  • Demonstrated experience researching and responding to data requests or data calls on deadline, with documented sources and methods.
  • Demonstrated experience presenting analysis and explaining reports to senior or executive‑level decision makers, orally and in writing.
  • Proficiency with standard business software for presentations, word processing, spreadsheets, and SharePoint‑based collaboration.
  • Ability to work independently, manage competing priorities, and collaborate effectively with a geographically distributed team.
Desired qualifications
  • Experience supporting Navy, NAVSEA, or submarine and shipbuilding industrial base programs.
  • Knowledge of defense supply chain management, logistics, or supply chain risk management.
  • Experience with cloud data platforms in government environments, such as AWS GovCloud or Azure Government, including Impact Level 4 and 5 workloads.
  • Familiarity with Department of War and Navy enterprise data platforms such as Advana and Jupiter.
  • Experience coding in Python for data analysis, manipulation, and automation (using pandas, numpy, or similar libraries).
  • Experience with ETL/ELT processes and data pipelines
  • Experience working on Agile teams using Jira and Confluence.
  • Professional certification such as Certified Data Management Professional (CDMP) or a cloud data certification.
  • Master's degree in a related field.
