Job summary

Children of Promise, NYC is seeking a Dance Activity Specialist to organize, lead, and promote interest in dance activities for youth across Brooklyn and the South Bronx.

You will implement the NYS Arts Learning Standards, adapt lessons to student needs, direct rehearsals, and ensure safety. Requires an Associate Degree and at least two years of youth dance instruction; on-site, part-time, Monday–Friday, 10–15 hours weekly, $25–$30/hour.

• Must have experience teaching youth in dance.
• Associate Degree required.
• Punctual and reliable with strong communication skills.

Responsibilities

Instructors utilize and adapt the New York State Arts Learning Standards in order to create an engaging and rewarding activity that encourages participation in CPNYC programs. Dance Specialists organize, lead, and promote interest in activities such as traditional jazz, African dance, folk dance, hip-hop and funk dance, Afro dance, ballet, lyrical, contemporary dance, flamenco, modern dance, tap dance, Latin dance, ballroom dance, improvisational dance, step, freestyle, and break/house dance.Essential Job FunctionsEstablish and enforce rules for behavior and procedures for maintaining order among the students for whom they are responsibleOrganize, lead, and promote interest in dance activitiesOrganize performance groups and direct their rehearsalsEstablish clear objectives for all lessons, units, and projects, and communicate those objectives to studentsAscertain and interpret group interests, evaluate equipment and facilities, and adapt activities to meet the students’ needsExplain principles, techniques, and safety procedures to participants in the activities, and demonstrate use of materials and equipmentGreet new arrivals to activities, introducing them to other students, explaining the rules, and encouraging participationEvaluate activities to determine whether they are producing desired resultsAdapt teaching methods and instructional materials to meet students' varying needs and interestsSupport progressive development of student skills leading to a final projectProvide support during the academic and homework hourPromote positive character development in all youthRequired Knowledge, Skill and ExperienceMust have experience successfully teaching and instructing youth in danceMust be responsible, reliable, and punctualExcellent communication and interpersonal skills requiredQualificationsAssociate Degree requiredMinimum of two (2) years of work-related skill, knowledge, or experience is requiredMust have a passion for CPNYC's mission and demonstrated interest in the field of education and youth developmentCertifications and credentials in the respective skill-based activity highly preferredCandidates who are qualified to lead instruction in more than one activity preferredConditions of EmploymentAll CPNYC staff must successfully complete pre-employment clearance requirements prior to their start date, including a Statewide Central Register database check, a Justice Center Staff Exclusion List check, fingerprint-supported criminal history screening, and verification of employment history. Mandated reporter training is required of all staff. Employment is contingent upon satisfactory completion of these requirements. The hourly pay rate range for this position is $25.00 to $30.00 per hour.
