Job summary

Prime Healthcare Saint Francis Hospital in Evanston, IL, seeks a Cytotechnologist to perform specialized cytology evaluation, table-side FNA assistance, and accurate reporting to support patient care. The role requires CLIA/CAP compliance understanding and coordination with pathologists and lab leadership.

You will maintain productivity, quality programs, and complete documentation while preparing and staining cytology specimens and collaborating across the lab team.

Qualifications

• ASCP Cytotechnologist certification, or equivalent or Completion of a cytotechnology program accredited by CAAHEP, required as stated in CLIA (42 CFR § 493.1483).
• Minimum of one year hospital-based laboratory experience preferred.

Responsibilities

• Screen and evaluate gynecologic (Pap tests) and non-gynecologic cytology specimens for abnormalities.
• Perform microscopic examination and identify cellular changes consistent with benign, pre-malignant, and malignant conditions.
• Prepare and stain cytologic specimens using appropriate laboratory techniques.
• Assist pathologists during fine needle aspiration (FNA) procedures, including specimen adequacy assessment when applicable.
• Ensure accurate documentation and reporting of findings in the laboratory information system.
• Maintain productivity and turnaround time standards for cytology case review.
• Correlate cytology findings with clinical history and previous pathology results when available.
• Participate in quality assurance and quality improvement programs, including cytology-histology correlation and rescreening requirements.
• Ensure compliance with CLIA, CAP, and other regulatory standards for cytology practice.
• Maintain equipment, reagents, and work areas in a clean, safe, and organized manner.
• Troubleshoot technical or specimen-related issues and elevate as needed.
• Participate in proficiency testing and continuing education to maintain competency.
• Assist with workload distribution and prioritization of cases.
• Collaborate with pathologists, laboratory staff, and other healthcare professionals to ensure optimal patient care.
• Support documentation and billing processes as required.
• Participate in special projects and departmental initiatives.
• Perform additional duties as assigned by the Laboratory Director, Manager, or Pathologist.
