Job description

Under the supervision of the Technical Supervisor, certified by the Board of Pathology, this individual oversees the Histology/Cytology Laboratory section and performs assigned services in accordance with departmental policies.

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Adhere to corporate, hospital, and regulatory policies governing clinical laboratory services.
• Direct and manage staff, ensuring efficient operations, resource allocation, and compliance with policies.
• Communicate problems and nonconformance to laboratory management.
• Lead laboratory operations, ensuring proper resource use, staff management, and adherence to procedures.
• Solve problems and ensure safe equipment operation and maintenance.
• Ensure timely sample processing and adherence to laboratory guidelines for reagents and supplies.
• Perform tests requiring special skills and assist in special laboratory circumstances.
• Monitor instrument maintenance, quality control, and system performance.
• Ensure all records are properly kept and test systems are functioning correctly, taking remedial actions when necessary.
• Oversee specimen handling, proficiency testing, and timely reporting of results to clinicians.
• Provide leadership and technical training to staff, offering constructive feedback and monitoring work.
• Initiate and direct studies to improve laboratory operations and develop new methods.
• Participate in quality assurance activities and ensure accurate record keeping.
• Document supervisory reviews, even when delegated to trained staff.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

• Valid license as a clinical laboratory technologist, cytotechnologist, or histotechnologist issued by the NYSED.
• In addition, candidates must also meet one of the qualification requirements of a laboratory supervisor as outlined in Title 10, Section 58-1.4 of the New York Public Health Law.
