Job summary

HTU in Knoxville, TN, is seeking a Cytology Technologist to screen gynecologic and non-gynecologic specimens and perform microscopic evaluation under CLIA guidelines.

The role requires a Cytology program completion, ASCP CT certification, and Tennessee Cytotechnologist license, with preferred master’s degree and Cytology experience. Must handle high-volume labs, work with LIS, and adapt to shifts.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Chemical or Biological science, Cytology, Clinical Laboratory Science, or Medical Technology.
• Completion of a Cytology program.
• ASCP Cytotechnologist (CT) Certification.
• Tennessee state Cytotechnologist license.
• Master’s degree in Cytology (preferred).
• Three months or more Cytology experience (preferred).
• Proficient with computers and laboratory information systems.

Responsibilities

• Screen and evaluate gynecologic and non-gynecologic specimens for malignant or abnormal conditions.
• Screen liquid-based cytology (manual and imaged) and conventional slides.
• Microscopic evaluation of cytological specimens per lab procedures and policies.
• Document workload, including screening and non-screening activities per CLIA guidelines.
• Maintain integrity in accurate reporting of results.
• Assist with Fine Needle Aspiration procedures.
• Meet slide screening requirements per SOPs.
• Finalize testing results in the computer accurately and timely.
• Provide backup for cytology processing.
• Comply with safety, infection control, and HIPAA policies.

Your Role

Here’s what you will be doing:

• Screen and evaluate gynecologic and non-gynecologic specimens for possible malignant or abnormal conditions
• Screen all liquid based cytology, both manual and imaged, as well as conventional slides
• Perform microscopic evaluation of cytological specimens following laboratory procedures and policies
• Ensure proper documentation of workload recording, including screening and non-screening activities as required by CLIA and laboratory guidelines
• Maintain absolute integrity in accurate performance and reporting of results
• Assist with Fine Needle Aspirations
• Meet slide screening requirements per standard operating procedure
• Finalize testing results into the computer accurately and timely
• Provide backup for cytology processing and other tasks as needed
• Comply with all safety, infection control, and HIPAA policies

About You

• Able to pass slide screening requirements and annual CAP proficiency test
• Understanding of cytology preparation techniques and laboratory operations, policies, and procedures
• Experience in a high volume clinical laboratory environment
• Ability to work independently and within a team environment
• Proficient with computers and familiar with laboratory information systems
• High attention to detail with strong communication and organizational skills
• Ability to handle physical requirements of the position and pass a standardized color blindness test
• Flexibility to work overtime or other shifts depending on business needs
